Mary Jo and I have had the privilege and pleasure of staying with Dave Harper and his wife, Barb, while teaching in Pinedale, WY. We always enjoy being with them, both because of their great hospitality and the stimulating conversation.
Dave, currently the President of our Board of Directors, reminded me this morning of a quotation, originally written in 1983, which I had read years ago. With today’s push toward genetic engineering, I think we should be aware of the evolutionary and new age philosophy which permeates some of today’s genetic researchers. Back in 1983, Jeremy Rifkin wrote:
“We no longer feel ourselves to be guests in someone else’s home and therefore obliged to make our behavior conform with a set of pre-existing cosmic rules. It is our creation now. We make the rules. We establish the parameters of reality. We create the world, and because we do, we no longer feel beholden to outside forces. We no longer have to justify our behavior, for we are now the architects of the universe. We are responsible to nothing outside ourselves. For we are the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever and ever.” (Jeremy Rifkin, Algeny, 1983, p. 244.)
Rifkin then went on to say that we have only copied the creation in the past, but now we will make new things which will surpass any design that has been before. With a no-Creator God concept, man is left to his own vices.
From my perspective that we have an all-knowing Creator God, I would want to know why God made certain things the way He did before I started to change it. Man has made big mistakes in the past when we didn’t understand the function of parts of even our own body (tonsils, appendix, pituitary gland, etc). Why should we think that a genetically altered creation including our food, and eventually humans themselves, will be superior to God’s design? I really wonder when God will finally say enough is enough and put an end to all of man’s arrogant pride.
