Who is the Creator? How Can I Know Him?

Think about it. If God cared enough to create the world and all that is in it, wouldn’t you think He would communicate or speak with us so we can find out Who He is and where we fit into His plan? Actually, God is always speaking. He not only spoke the world into existence, but He continued to speak to his created people about who He is and what he wanted from us. These people wrote down what they heard and compiled it into what is now called His written Word – the Bible. By reading the Bible, people today can learn different aspects of the multifaceted character and nature of God. We learn of His power, His wisdom, His creativity, and His concern for detail and order. We learn of His goodness and love. We also learn of His sovereignty and His plan for His creation.

But the Bible doesn’t stop there. It takes a surprising twist in which even the most ardent movie enthusiast would sit up and take notice. It talks about the Creator stepping into His own creation! That is like an artist stepping into his painting. When God steps into His creation as a man, the Bible calls Him Jesus, the Christ (or Messiah). Talk about deep plots! All of a sudden we see a new and bigger dimension of the Creator God — God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit all working in concert. (Many heavy theological books have been written about this amazing twist, but don’t worry about all of that in this short webpage! Be assured though, that they are all there even in the first chapters of the Bible.)

But the unique twist gets even better as the plot unfolds. The Bible calls this Jesus the Word of God and says, “The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us …” (John 1:14). It also says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” It goes on to declare, “All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made” (John 1:1-3). Later we read, “For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible … all things were created by Him, and for him” (Colossians 1:16).  The “Him” referred to is Jesus of Nazereth.

Whoa!!! Don’t miss this plot! The eternal, almighty Creator steps into His creation and takes on human flesh. He is actually born as a baby and walks this earth as a man. So, Who is the Creator? According to the Bible, Jesus Christ is the Creator … and throughout His life, Jesus gave evidence of His true identity by creating wine out of water, creating health by healing the sick, creating sight by giving sight to the blind, creating fish and bread when He fed thousands with just a few fish and a little bread, and even creating human life by raising Lazarus from the dead. Wow! What a plot, and what an awesome and powerful Creator is our Lord Jesus Christ!

If you find this hard to fathom, just think. Isn’t it much easier to believe in a wise and powerful Creator than it is to believe that nothing created everything by time, chance, and natural processes?

In the last section, we saw that the God revealed in the Bible is the Creator of the heavens and the earth and all that is in them. (Exodus 20:11) Furthermore, we found that this Creator stepped into His creation, took on human flesh, and lived as a man – the man, Jesus Christ. This is a mystery indeed. But you might ask, “Why would the eternal, almighty Creator leave His heavenly home, take on flesh and become a man?” The answer goes way back to the book of Genesis and is made clear throughout the whole Bible. God wants to be found and He wants us to know Him. He actually says, “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13).

According to God’s own Word, this is what happened and how He planned to fix it.  God created a good and beautiful home for mankind. He provided abundantly for all of their needs, and together the first man and woman (Adam and Eve) shared a wonderful relationship with their Creator and with one another.

But God didn’t want robots. He wanted man to be truly free to live in a love relationship with Him, so He gave man the choice. He provided a simple test of love, which would be demonstrated through trust and obedience. Would Adam choose to believe God and go His way, or would he choose to go his own way instead? Sadly, Adam chose to disobey the Creator and the free and open relationship was broken. (You can read the whole account in Genesis 3.) With Adam’s sin, death came into the world, along with thorns and thistles, struggle, pain, and brokenness. (Rom. 5:12)

Adam should have died immediately, for the wages of sin is death (Genesis 2:16-17; Romans 6:23). But fortunately, the account doesn’t end there. The Creator had a plan. He clothed Adam and Eve in coats of skins, in effect providing a substitute to take their penalty and “covering” them with the blood of sacrifice (Hebrews 9:22). Of course, the blood of animals could never really take away sin (Hebrews 10:11), but it was a picture or object lesson, foreshadowing that the true Lamb of God (Jesus, the Messiah) who would come to this earth as a baby, live a sinless life, and then endure an agonizing death on a cross as a substitute for our sin. Wow! Another novel twist: Our Creator, Who had no sin of His own, took upon Himself the sins of the world and paid the penalty of death for us, His sinful creatures (2 Corinthians 5:21). But it didn’t end there – God raised Jesus from the dead, proving that the payment was sufficient and the sacrifice was accepted.

Now mankind – each of us – has a choice. Just like the first man and woman, we must choose whether to love and obey our Creator, or to “do it our way.” All of us have sinned (gone our own way) and deserve death (Romans 3:23), but God has made a way for us to come back into fellowship with Him. The Bible tells us: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son [Jesus], that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Jesus Christ willingly came into the world to save sinners (I Timothy 1:15). He has already paid the penalty for our sin, but each of us must make the choice to turn away from sin and turn back to God. We must stop trusting in our own good works to justify us before God and put our trust in Jesus Christ and the sacrifice He made for us on the cross. (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Just like Adam, you have a choice to make. Will you believe and obey God, or will you “do it your way?” Believe the evidence of nature and the revelation of God’s Word. Turn away from your sin and turn back to God. Believe His Word, trust His way, and follow Him. “…if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” (Romans 10:9)

As you believe Him and rely on Him for your salvation, you will be saved (born again). As you grow with Him and learn to follow Him as Lord, you will discover the purpose for which you were created, and you will really begin to live – right here on this earth, and on into eternity. We encourage you – do it today! He wants to be found by you!
