Visitors on cave tours are almost always told that the large stalactites and stalagmites have taken tens of thousands or even millions of years to form. Recent discoveries have shown this is not necessarily so. Consider the following:
- A bat (not yet decomposed) was found cemented inside a stalagmite in Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico. This had to have formed recently and VERY rapidly.
- In a cave in the Tehuacan Valley of Mexico, there is a vast chamber called Hall of the Dead. Skeletons found in that cave are covered with stalagmites which scientists have dated almost 3,000 years old.
These stalactite and stalagmite formations provide no evidence that the earth is extremely old.
