The Genesis Flood Updates

genesisFloodThe Genesis Flood was written in 1961 by Dr. Henry M. Morris and Dr. John Whitcomb and is truly a classic book. This book has had a huge impact in drawing Christians back to the Truth of the Bible with evidence derived, not only from the Biblical text itself, but also from the science of geology. However, much work has been done in the field of geology since that book was published. We have always wanted to see an update to that book.

Earths-Catastrophic-Past-288x300Finally, two different publications have been produced. The first, Earth’s Catastrophic Past, is a 1,100 page, semi-technical, 2-volume set written in 2009 by Dr. Andrew Snelling – one of the world’s leading geologists in the creation science movement. According to the Institute for Creation Research, “Earth’s Catastrophic Past provides up-to-date geological evidence that demonstrates the authority and accuracy of the biblical account of creation and the Flood. . . with in-depth scholarly research and insight. Topics covered in this two-volume set include: The Biblical Record of the Global Genesis Flood; Non-Geological Arguments Used Against a Global Genesis Flood; Noah, the Ark, and the Animals; The Framework for a Scriptural Geology; and A Biblical Geologic Model of Earth History.” This is a great book for those willing to devote serious study time. (Hardcover; $60/set)

The second book, however, is the one that I recommend to virtually everyone. Make sure you get this book. It is what I would have tried to write but Dr. John D. Morris saved me a whole lot of time! Anyone who has been to one of my seminars knows I like pictures and lots of them. Well, so does John Morris! His book, The Global Flood, Unlocking Earth’s Geological History, is chock-full of wonderful photos and illustrations. It is easy to read, yet concise enough to engage even casual learners.

gen-flood-flatThis 176-page book fills a need, not only for geologists, but for the lay person who wants to know about geologic and Biblical evidence for the Flood and its related issues. Dr. John C. Whitcomb, who co-authored the original classic book, writes this in his Forward to The Global Flood:

“For some, the thought of a worldwide flood is ludicrous. But for serious scientists who research the various formations of the earth and the catastrophic processes that shaped the world we see around us today, the evidence of a global flood is indisputable. The Global Flood presents that evidence in a way that clearly demonstrates why the biblical account of the Flood matters to all of us who want to understand and communicate the truth of the Genesis Flood with confidence. The Global Flood helps to meet a great need today. It is comprehensive. It is aimed at those who are not experts in earth sciences. People everywhere need to understand the true significance of the year-long, mountain-covering Deluge that buried and fossilized trillions of marine and land animals and plants only a few thousand years ago.”

This book not only gives evidence for the Flood, but also answers many of the objections to the Flood. It is a great resource for pastors and Bible teachers, as well as students and laymen. I believe this 8.5” x 11,” hardcover book will have a big impact on a lot of people. I recommend that you invest in the lives of your friends and family by getting a stack of them to give out for Christmas gifts. ($20)

“The Brother of” Goliath

In the September/October 2012 issue of Think & Believe, I wrote that Bible skeptics attack the Bible by citing 2 Sam 21:19, which states that Elhanan killed Goliath. “So who really killed Goliath, David or Elhanan,” taunts the skeptic. I answered the objection by citing the context of the above passage which clearly shows that it was at a later time and that Elhanan killed a brother or relative of the “famous” Goliath (perhaps with the same name). This also agrees with the report found in 1Ch 20:5, which shows that this was a “brother” of Goliath. Keep in mind that the word translated “brother” could also be translated as “relative.” This clears up the supposed “conflict” and fits well with the context and wording of the 2 Samuel verse.

Some readers wrote in to ask why I didn’t merely refer to the King James Version of the 2 Samuel passage in question. I failed to do so for good reason, which I didn’t have room to adequately cover in the article. The KJV version states that Elhanan killed “the brother of Goliath.”  So, yes, this would have cleared the conflict up immediately. However “the brother of” is in italics in the KJV. This means it was added by the translator for clarification but was not in the original text. Skeptics who care nothing about the KJV, or the Bible in general, would ask if the KJV translators were wrongfully adding to the Bible text to “cover up” a Bible contradiction. No, that is not the case as indicated by their correct way of notating the clarification.  The translators correctly paid attention to the CONTEXT.

Keep in mind that criticism against the Bible is frequently leveled at young people who have only read modern translations of the Bible, if they have even read it at all.  These do not contain the above mentioned italicized words as found in the KJV. The attack is also leveled at the many young people who do not have a good grasp of Scripture or who don’t bother thinking about the actual CONTEXT. Hence, they are easy prey for the skeptic’s challenge to the Bible. The CONTEXT of the verse is plenty clear in virtually any of the translations our young people use in order to answer the anti-Bible critic, even if they never see the KJV’s rendering of the verse which includes “the brother of” Goliath.

Danger! Cliff Ahead! – Confirmed!

Mary Jo and I are at AOI’s Creation Family Camp at Redcloud Ranch for this week and next.  We spoke to a long-time friend after the church service we attended that first Sunday we arrived in Lake City. God has a way of reinforcing the message we have been sharing. Justin recounted an incident he had experienced about being on a horse on a dark night. The horse would not proceed forward and no amount of coaxing could get the horse to “cooperate.” When Justin got off of the horse he found out the reason. He and the horse were at the edge of a cliff.

Since he was on our mailing list, I told Justin that he needed to read our next issue of Think and Believe in which I wrote an article entitled Danger, Cliff Ahead describing an almost identical incident regarding the brother of AOI’s Board president.  In fact we had mailed that issue a few days before we left Grand Junction. Our arrival in Lake City had beaten the mail system’s delivery. I guess cars are faster than “pony express”!

If you haven’t yet read the last issue, click above on the link where it is posted. There is a cliff ahead for students and they need to be warned. What is the cliff? It is the barrage of evolutionary and other anti-Biblical arguments waiting to be leveled at their faith in Christ when they arrive on the campus. Most students and their parents are caught totally unaware of the real danger that lies ahead at the university. Please read the article.

AOI’s Newsletters

I was able to get the Kids Think & Believe Too! newsletter finished and ready for the printer before the busyness of Christmas season took over. AOI publishes an adult newsletter and a children’s newsletter every 2 months. Dave and Mary Jo Nutting, along with occasional guest writers, write the articles for Think and Believe, and then have graphic artist Mark Sonmor add the artwork and layout. I (with occasional help from my wife Marilyn) write the Kids Think & Believe Too, do all the artwork, layout, and back page puzzles. I then have Marilyn, our secretary Gail, accountant Glenn, and Dave and Mary Jo edit it for grammar and content.  Once that is done, I make corrections and finalize it for the printer and website.

Each issue takes many hours of research, writing, artwork, and editing. We send out 6,000 to 10,000 of these FREE (to the subscriber) newsletters every two months. At the end of all that hard work, a natural question would be, is it worth it … are these newsletters glorifying our Creator and having an impact on people’s lives? This letter we received this past year encourages us and inspires us to keep on getting the word out about our awesome Lord and Savior:

I was reading one of the past issues of Think and Believe for Kids and I couldn’t help but Thank God for your efforts.  The battle against the lie of evolution is waging today because of your efforts.  Both L_____ and I want to thank you for your seminars, your summer camps and the many, many issues of Think and Believe that reside within our home.  My children are blessed in ways they can’t even understand because of them. L_____ and I were stuck with issues of National Geographic lying around when we were kids.  Who knows the difference of reading materials will make for them and the world in the future.  Please know that you are very loved and appreciated during this yearend. God Bless you all.

If you are not currently receiving AOI’s newsletters, you can go to http://www.discovercreation.org/articles.htm  and view them online, or e-mail us at aoi@discovercreation.org,  requesting to be put on the mailing list … be sure to include your complete mailing address along with e-mail address (for future notices when the newest  newsletters are available on the web).

Coincidence or God-cidence ?

Do you believe in coincidences? I usually like to call them God-cidences.

I was really up to my neck with things to do before the next speaking trip and needed to get the articles written quickly for the next issue of Think & Believe. The article I wanted to write to fit the flow of the issue was on the communications of honeybees. I made myself a note to begin doing research the next AM for some of the latest info on honeybee communication.

Not having computer web access, I turned on my smart phone to surf the web. I was surprised that it automatically took me to the New York Times news site. Guess what was in the headlines? God saved me a lot of research time as there was a big bold headline about the latest research on honeybee communication just posted that day! I have referenced it in the article, so stay tuned for bee communication in the next issue of Think & Believe! I love those God-cidences! Thank You Lord!
