My Fake Fireplace

This winter, I got an electric fireplace. It operates as a “fake fire-light show” merely for ambience, but also has a great infra-red heater when that portion is turned on.

I was talking with my son as I took the traditional pose of backing up to the fire and warming myself by fake flames. The heating unit was turned off. However, even though there was no heat, my mind was trying to tell me there was. After all, past experience has taught me that fireplaces and campfires produce heat. I laughed at the moment of living in unreality as I realized what I was doing. My son was also about to say that I should stand back from it as I was blocking the heat.

Oh, how our minds play tricks on us.  My 3 year old grandson, Samuel, gave us another example of that this morning. He came out dressed in a pair of shorts and a T-shirt. He said he was tired of winter and liked summer better. So maybe if he wore this it would make it be summer.  I like that and wished it would work, as I also prefer warm over cold.

All this is to say that some evolutionists believe in evolution in order to get around the reality that there is a Creator God. Their reasoning is frequently in contradiction to the obvious evidence for Creation. For instance, the chance of evolving a cell by accident is worse than producing a jet airplane by a tornado sweeping through a junkyard. Also, evolutionists should weigh carefully just how nothing, or no information, could produce all of the encyclopedic and precise information contained in our DNA. It is not reality, but If you don’t really think about it, you can trick you brain into believing it was possible by using “if- maybe” arguments. If you can do that without flinching, then make sure you buy an electric fireplace. Perhaps you can even turn off your furnace and the heating element and save a lot of money on fuel bills. Then as you bask in the fake “flames” and conjure up just so-so evolutionary arguments, make sure you put on shorts and a T-Shirt.

Response to a Common Argument

University professors, who should really know better, state that “evolution is everywhere,” referring to minor changes in coloration, nose size in family members, or whatever change you might notice. So how should one answer that line of reasoning?

First of all, it is appropriate to point out that you have to start with something to get any changes at all. So, how do we get the genetic pool in the first place that spells out coloration, nose size, etc. It is an amazing faith to believe that “no” genetic information existed, and suddenly, out of that “nothing,” without any higher power, all of the genetic information arose which would fill billions of encyclopedias.

Secondly, those who hold to the argument that minor changes or “micro” evolution surely leads to major changes or (what used to be called) macro-evolution must have a great deal of faith in time, and chance. Even many evolutionists (including a major conference of several hundred) have concluded that micro-evolution does not necessarily translate into macro-evolution.

The type of minor changes usually presented to us as evidence of evolution are almost always a recombination of genetic information that is already present in the originally created genetic pool.

Recombination of what is already present will never explain the origin of genetic information in the first place. You have to start with something!

Let me explain it another way. Think about taking the 5 colors of paint that artists usually start with: black, white, red, yellow and blue. By mixing black or white with any one of the other colors, or by mixing the other colors together with varying amounts of each, you can get an endless variety of colors and shades. You might say you “evolved” a new color, but it is only a combination of what was there originally. If you don’t have all of the basic colors, it certainly limits the potential. For example, if all you had were black, white, and blue, all you would get are shades of blue.

This is the problem with macro-evolution. Micro-evolution uses the colors of ink that are available to choose from; macro must get new basic colors. In fact, macro-evolution starts with nothing and somehow, mysteriously all the basic colors appear (of course, with the magic evolutionary wand of time and accidents). If yellow and red pigments are not present, you only get shades of blue. Try as you like, you can’t get any shades of yellow or red, so evolutionists will be left singing the blues. You might assume that some lucky “mutations” produced yellow and red colors from black, white, or blue, but that is only an assumption.

To sum it up, macro-evolution starts with no colors and ends up with every color. This is supposed to happen by micro-evolution. However, micro-evolution has to have something there to begin with to even get minor variations. Since you can’t get something from nothing, evolution is shot down.

Evolution and a Matter of Degrees

Brrrr… It’s cold here. So far this year, it warmed up once above 30 °F.  One month ago, Mary Jo & I stepped onto an airplane in Mexico saying goodbye to temperatures in the 80’s. About 5 hours later, we landed at home and immediately began a month of saying, “Brrrrrrrr, it’s cold!”

From highs of 85 down to a low of -5 is huge. But it’s a matter of degrees! Dave Harper, the president of our Board, came down recently for our last Board meeting.  The temp was 15 degrees and heading downward. Dave had the gall to say how balmy the temperature was and that it felt like spring time. OK, he lives in Pinedale, Wyoming.  Someone told me the coldest winter they ever experienced was the summer they spent in Pinedale. Yep, it’s a matter of degrees and what you get used to.

One morning in Mexico it was about 70 degrees — to me, quite balmy. However, to the family with the little boy all bundled up in a full snowsuit, 70 felt cold. I thought that family was ready to enter a snowmobile race in the arctic the way they were bundled.

Someone recently posted on Facebook  that it was  a -20 degrees. Wow!  It didn’t seem that cold to me. Maybe, I was starting to get used to cold again. Then I realized  they meant -20 Celcius,  not Fahrenheit. A -20°C is actually -4°F.  Still too cold, but at least I felt warmer. Perhaps, I should consider reporting temperatures in degrees Kelvin, which refers to how many degrees it is above absolute zero. So a  -4°F would be 253°K. It is still the same actual temperature, but I sure could deceive myself into feeling much warmer. In fact, I might even grab my swimsuit to sunbathe in a snow drift! Defining terms is really important.

All of this relates to the evolution debate. We have to define our terms.  Students are taught that evolution is merely change. They even become comfortable with believing that minor degrees of change is actually evolution (such as color variation in moths). In reality, this is nothing more than simple genetic variation in a created kind (such as big dogs and little dogs). We point this out to students who are hot about evolution. It is a matter of the degree of change and type of change, rather than merely change that is important. You might deceive yourself into thinking it is evolution, but minor variation certainly does not explain the broader degree of evolution – how goo changes into you by way of the zoo.

Magic-Wand of Naturalism

I just read an article about a young man who is campaigning to make sure all schools, including private and Christian schools, that receive any state money such as vouchers, would not be allowed to include creation in science. This person was arguing that only evolution fits the criteria of science: observable, naturalistic, testable, falsifiable, and expandable… which he thinks “is everything that creationism is not.”

Notice that he added and subtracted from the classical criteria of science, which is: Science is observable, testable, repeatable, and falsifiable.

Naturalistic is added: Just by adding that word to a definition of science, he has already defined creation, intelligent design, or anything except atheism, totally out of science. This is a frequent ploy to try to discredit our position and everything we say. Since we are not “naturalistic,” we can’t be scientists and must have a religious bias. That redefinition of science has mainly surfaced in the last 30 years. Today it is regularly used as a bludgeon to keep creation and intelligent design out of the science classroom.

Repeatable is left out. Evidently he is well aware that evolution is not repeatable (but neither is creation), so he left that out. Why? We can’t wait millions of years to see evolution repeat itself.

For the same reason and since no one was around to see it happen, neither cell-man evolution or creation is observable, testable, or even falsifiable.

Expandable is added. I find that interesting since it is not usually mentioned as an earmark of science. However, it is very fitting for evolution since a new fix-it-patch has to be applied to evolutionary theory frequently as new anti-evolution data surfaces. This has been especially true with much of the latest data on the genome project causing evolutionists to scramble faster than someone dodging bullets in a war zone. (See DiscoverCreation.org for those articles.)

By the way, I suggest that all four of the classical tests for science certainly “is everything that evolution is not.”  “Naturalistic” and “expandable” are the only ones he listed that would qualify for what evolution “is” all about. However, even “expandable” would not often be naturalistic, because it frequently takes a “magic wand” to explain the anti-evolution data away.

Creation in Mexican Drug and Rehab Centers

Two of the locations where Mary Jo & I had opportunity to speak while in Mexico last month were at drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers. Both of these facilities were “lock up” facilities, meaning that the people in there were not allowed to leave. These centers were last chance facilities in lieu of actually being put in prison.

In other words, we had a captive audience for the creation and Gospel message. Of course, while we were there, we were also locked in close quarters with them. As some of them looked like pretty rough dudes, we were very happy that the crowd was quite attentive and responded quite well to what we were saying. There was also quite a mixed group from two 10-12 year old boys, several young ladies, and men up to at least 50 years old.

The message we gave was definitely a creation verses evolution message (What’s the Evidence?). It was coupled with the fact that they are not the products of accidents. Instead they are uniquely created in the image of God. Some of these men and women have been told that, or at least have thought, they are worthless. However, they responded well to knowing that they are important to God since they were created by Him. Questions after the presentation continued for quite some time afterwards. One of the men, who was actually originally from California, told me that the presentation was so very important. He said that what I had presented “blew my mind.” The last time I heard that exact phrase used by a participant was many years ago. It was from a “former” atheist who had heard Mary Jo & I speak 7 years prior. The former atheist, who had become a deacon in his church, asked if we knew what we were doing. He then said, “You guys are running around the country blowing people’s minds. (PTL! And Lord, allow us to keep doing that!)

We certainly hope and pray that these men and women who were at these rehabilitation centers, find this material, and a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ to be a real spiritual “mind-blowing experience” and that they can be set free from their addictions which physically “blow their minds.”

Just Like Dad

Walking the beach while on vacation, I saw a heart-warming site – a father standing with his son looking out at the waves and ships on the horizon. The thing that struck my heart was the way the son was standing. He purposefully looked at his dad and then assumed exactly the same pose, with hands behind his back, left hand resting in the right, gazing out at the ocean. (I would have loved to take a picture, but I didn’t want to disturb the moment for this father and son.)

Watching this boy of about 9 years – seeing the way he was watching and imitating his dad – caused me to reflect on the importance of the example we set for our kids and grandkids. They are watching us! Do we really want those following us to be “just like us,” or are there some areas we would cringe to see them copy? How important it is that we live consistent, God-honoring lives before them.

But then, I got to thinking – how can we become people worthy of following – we who are weak, fallen, and often struggling in various ways ourselves? Only by doing what the boy on the beach was doing – by looking intently at our Father – by seeing Him in the life of His Son, Jesus, our perfect example – and by deliberately, by the power of the Holy Spirit, imitating Him. Only then will we be worthy examples of humility, faith and endurance for our kids and others to follow. As Paul says in I Corinthians 11:1, “Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.” (NASB)

“ . . . let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith . . .” (Hebrews 12:1-2, NASB, emphasis added)

“The Brother of” Goliath

In the September/October 2012 issue of Think & Believe, I wrote that Bible skeptics attack the Bible by citing 2 Sam 21:19, which states that Elhanan killed Goliath. “So who really killed Goliath, David or Elhanan,” taunts the skeptic. I answered the objection by citing the context of the above passage which clearly shows that it was at a later time and that Elhanan killed a brother or relative of the “famous” Goliath (perhaps with the same name). This also agrees with the report found in 1Ch 20:5, which shows that this was a “brother” of Goliath. Keep in mind that the word translated “brother” could also be translated as “relative.” This clears up the supposed “conflict” and fits well with the context and wording of the 2 Samuel verse.

Some readers wrote in to ask why I didn’t merely refer to the King James Version of the 2 Samuel passage in question. I failed to do so for good reason, which I didn’t have room to adequately cover in the article. The KJV version states that Elhanan killed “the brother of Goliath.”  So, yes, this would have cleared the conflict up immediately. However “the brother of” is in italics in the KJV. This means it was added by the translator for clarification but was not in the original text. Skeptics who care nothing about the KJV, or the Bible in general, would ask if the KJV translators were wrongfully adding to the Bible text to “cover up” a Bible contradiction. No, that is not the case as indicated by their correct way of notating the clarification.  The translators correctly paid attention to the CONTEXT.

Keep in mind that criticism against the Bible is frequently leveled at young people who have only read modern translations of the Bible, if they have even read it at all.  These do not contain the above mentioned italicized words as found in the KJV. The attack is also leveled at the many young people who do not have a good grasp of Scripture or who don’t bother thinking about the actual CONTEXT. Hence, they are easy prey for the skeptic’s challenge to the Bible. The CONTEXT of the verse is plenty clear in virtually any of the translations our young people use in order to answer the anti-Bible critic, even if they never see the KJV’s rendering of the verse which includes “the brother of” Goliath.

Intense Interest even with lighting Challenges in Mexico

One thing I really appreciate when spending time in foreign cultures is the intense interest they have in our subject matter.  Even the children are intent …not to mention the parents. They are hungry for the information. This picture was taken in a Leon, Mexico, church at about the time of their normal break or siesta. I would venture to guess that if I took a similar picture in most churches in the States that we would catch plenty of people dozing!

Actually, I have heard it stated that if you were to line up — end-to-end — everyone who fell asleep in the pew in a church service on any given Sunday morning. . . they would be a whole lot more comfortable. :-)

Sometimes the lighting we have when giving our presentations is very good, as it was in this conference room in Leon, Mexico (picture to the right).  Other times, such as in another church in Leon, there were major difficulties in lighting (notice the sky lights in the ceiling we had to contend with. There was also bright sunlight coming in from the other end of the building). With only black and white pictures and images which they use for the song service, the visuals come out to a minimal, but barely workable, level. However, since we use so many pictures with high color (vivid) images, the slides actually show up horribly in very brightly lit rooms.

To overcome, we brought everyone in the church a little closer together and used our own projector (brighter), while using a screen on a slightly darker sidewall area. By projecting at closer range without the zoom feature, it worked reasonably well to get our points across. I knew what the images should look like, but I doubt most people really knew. They may have thought that our images could stand to be improved. (If only they could have seen my laptop screen!) Regardless of the difficulties, the people of this church actually stayed intently tuned for 2.5 hours of presentation and Q&A time after already attending their 1.5 hour worship service, so it couldn’t have been too bad.

It wasn’t until nearly the end of the program that I figured out why it was so HOT in that room. With the projector closer to me than normal, I was getting a hot blast of air from the projector fan!  I have been in the hot seat before, but this was a little different.

But even with the lighting issues, it has been a most rewarding time of teaching in Mexico.

Creation in Mexico

Mary Jo & I are “on vacation,” but, as you can see, we are in the midst of speaking on Creation vs. Evolution at several locations in Mexico. (What better thing to do on vacation? And yes, we will get some good R&R time!) On the right is Mary Jo giving evidence for creation and the problems with evolution through our Spanish translator to a group of 75 people who have congregated to hear about this issue on a Saturday afternoon. I wonder how many in the States would give up a prime shopping day on a Saturday just prior to Christmas to hear the truth. These people are hungry to hear the other side of the issue.

Actually, evolution is being taught in most places around the world. AOI speaking staff has now had opportunity to speak in about 30 countries around the world and has found that evolution is just as much an issue in these countries as in the States. We also find that there is good interest in Creation in virtually all the places we have gone.

We are thankful to be able to bring the message of Creation and the difficulties with evolution to people anywhere we are asked to go.  This is a big world, and our limited staff can only go to a small part of it. We need many more people to take this message far and wide! On this trip, we have given seminars/presentations to 3 different groups and still have more to do including a 3 day seminar at a large church. Already this week, 4 individuals told us they desire to be trained to help spread the message. We have been formulating how best to expand AOI’s training program and to do this in light of limited finances –  both AOI’s and those who wish to have the training. Pray with us for wisdom to find the best way to move forward.

“Portraits” from a University Campus

Presenting creation programs on a university campus brings out a variety of students with different backgrounds, different perspectives, and different motivations for coming. It’s quite a challenge to meet these varying needs in one presentation. That’s why we are glad for the Q&A time and one-on-one time before and after the presentations. Here are some “portraits” from just 2 nights of recent university presentations:

  • Twenty-year old history major – grew up in a “fundamental evangelical” church – now claiming to be an evolutionist – looking for something “new”—almost seems he is crying, “Convince me.”
  • Middle age man – going back to school to become a middle-school science teacher – church member – taking a class on Evolution vs. Creation – coming to learn more about creation model
  • Biology major – also in the Evolution vs. Creation class – identifies himself as an evolutionist — polite and attentive  — has questions about science and the Bible
  • Graduate student – says as he comes in, “I don’t know why I’m here. Maybe morbid curiosity.” – Lots of objections to creation – leaves halfway through presentation
  • Biology student – also in the Evolution vs. Creation class — says he believes in God – asks some penetrating questions – later says he likes playing the “devil’s advocate”
  • Young man – identified by his smile – lights came on for him when he came to our presentations last year – now a happy and devoted follower of Jesus

We plant, others water, but the Lord brings the harvest. Please join us in praying for these students, that God would bring forth abundant fruit from the seeds that have been planted. Pray too, for those who diligently work and witness and build relationships on campus throughout the school year.
