God’s Timing is Impeccable!

Whitewater adventure 1A couple of weeks ago, I called a friend of our ministry, Don Holmes, to see if he would help spread the word regarding AOI’s family camps as well as our Creation Action Boot Camps.  These are camps which we are offering this coming summer for teens and families with teens. I knew that Don helped in connecting a lot of churches and youth groups, both in Texas and in other states, with appropriate mission and camp opportunities. I also anticipated that those youth groups would really like to be fortified with creation and the problems of evolution, especially in Colorado, as they take part in AOI’s summer Rock and River Adventure. After all, how could Texas youth groups pass up the lure of 5 days of whitewater river rafting,  and rock and mountain climbing in Colorado??

Yellowstone 1Don’s answer to me was, “You can’t believe the timing of your call! I was just typing out an email that was going to a large number of youth groups listing opportunities.” Then he said that it was also quite unlikely that I would have caught him at his office number. He was  heading up to Colorado the very next week with a group of youth pastors and would like to have me speak to them about creation and the reliability of the Bible. Which I did just the other evening. Now, some of those youth workers are looking to have me speak at their churches.

The following morning (after speaking to the youth pastors), while I was talking to one of the youth pastors at a breakfast at the hotel, a couple who was not part of the group just happened to sit down at a table next to ours and overheard the conversation. They asked for information about our camps, training institute, and as well, seemed interested in checking out our information to see if their church would like to have us speak.

I can only say, “God’s timing (not mine) is truly impeccable!”

“Wet Glue”

This is not an unknown revelation … things break. Some of these broken things can be repaired if we can only stick them back together. The first item many of us turn to for repairs is duct-tape or bailing-wire; however, if you try to put a vase, or fine china, back together using duct-tape, the results are far from satisfactory – and a wire repair on such items is preposterous. So our next option for restoration is some type of glue product. Two of the most versatile glues I have found are superglue and epoxy, both working well on many types of materials. Yet even superglues and epoxies have their limits, especially when it comes to bonding materials in wet conditions.

MusselsSo how do you make better “wet glue”? Scientists have turned to one of God’s created creatures to study and develop glues that stick together underwater … they are observing the mussel.

“Mussels manufacture their glue under water, yet the glue can withstand the force of a thousand pounds per square inch. Mussel glue will even stick to Teflon! The mussel begins by making the glue in two parts, each part made by a separate gland. One gland produces proteins that are like resin. The other gland makes the hardeners. When these are mixed, they harden into a strand in only a couple of minutes. The mussel will make many of these strands as it fastens itself to a rock. As more of these strands are made, they begin to cross-link with one another, greatly adding to the strength of the bond. The mussel makes between five and ten different kinds of protein strands, carefully limiting the cross-linking to produce the greatest strength. Without this mix, the bond would be brittle and easily break.” (taken from the article “True Superglue” on the Creation Moments website.)

Scientists and engineers continue to find better and new ways to solve problems when they carefully study the design already established in God’s creation.

Total Surrender

I have been thinking quite a bit lately about the term “surrender.”  In the weeks leading up to surgery, the word took on a whole new meaning.  Suddenly, so many things were out of my control.  It sometimes takes a real attitude adjustment, to release OUR control to others, even to God.  I heard a sermon during this same time period,  reminding me that I cannot question God’s path because it is different than my agenda; even when that path includes cancer.  I MUST surrender.  Sometimes it is forced upon us.  We can respond willingly, or reluctantly.

This may seem silly, but right after surgery, when I was in the recovery room, the first thing I said to Rich was, “I have a great idea for a blog.”  As I was coming out of the anesthesia, my mind was thinking about my surrender to my surgeon and the other doctors and nurses that day.     I definitely was no longer in control.  I was TOTALLY in their hands (I know I am ultimately in the LordFreedom-at-the-cross’s hands). I was depending on them for everything. I had to trust them to know what they were doing.  And I did trust them.  Actually, I didn’t want to be in control! I didn’t have the medical know-how about these things. Even after the surgery, I had so many tubes, drains, monitors, and machines hooked up that I could hardly even move.

How silly, I thought, that sometimes we have a hard time surrendering to God, who is all-powerful, all-knowing, and so loving.  I would not have considered for a minute on giving advice to my surgeon on the best way to perform his job, or tell him that I maybe had a better plan.  But yet so often that is how we approach our heavenly Father, wanting our own agenda to be accomplished instead of surrendering to His path …whatever that may be.

Now I KNOW it is not an easy thing to do at times, but it is the only way to true joy and peace.  This also is not a one-time event, but a daily, even moment by moment, continual process, as I am finding out through my slower than I expected recovery process.  Again, I need to remind myself that I cannot, should not, and will not, question God’s agenda, for He is truly a competent, trustworthy Physician!

“Keep on Keeping on”

There is one specific New Year’s resolution that I have had for many years. It can be summed up by the words of encouragement to Mary Jo and I from a person who was deeply impacted by the creation message. She wrote, “Keep on keeping on!”

Since that note almost 25 years ago, that encouragement has been on our lips and now is also on the lips of other staff at AOI. The battle for the hearts and minds of our young people is huge and it is not going away any time soon. So we will “keep on keeping on!”

hSeven years ago, I wrote, “Yes, the battle is big, and we need your help. I am not talking only financial (although that would be great!) but I am stepping into a recruiter role: ‘Uncle Dave needs you!’ We need you to help carry the message to your own families and churches. AOI staff will keep dropping those depth charges on the evolutionary strongholds and continue to train others to do the same in their own communities. Will you take an active role in this battle for hearts and minds? If so, let us know so we can come along side of you.”

Keep in mind the passage from Hebrews 12:1, about running the good race: “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” (NKJV)

This verse is especially descriptive as stated in The Message: “Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we’d better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins.”

We at AOI purpose to do exactly that this year as we start a charter class for the 1-year Discover Creation Training Institute in August. We also hope that YOU, too, will resolve to “keep on keeping on” and reach out to many around YOU as you run this race in the battle for the heart and minds of this next generation.

Ocean Sediments and Salts: What do they really tell us? Creation Perspective

Creation Answer:

salt-in-oceans-no-words“Every year water and wind erode about 20 billion tons of dirt and rock debris from the continents and deposit them on the seafloor,” so “the seafloor should be choked with sediment many miles deep.” On average, there is only about 1,300 feet of sediment, which is not even close to a mile deep. Sediment is known to be lost due to tectonic plate activity, but with everything taken into account, that 1,300 feet of sediment would take 12 million years to form and that’s it. However, that doesn’t cause a problem for us, because the global flood would have caused a lot of sediment to build up initially. Over about 3 billion years, there would be “250x more sediment than we see today.” This is a huge difference.

The argument that the sediments may not have accumulated that fast in the past still has other problems. The shape of the sediments off the coast is evidence of sediments being rushed off the continents quickly and not by a very slow process. The underwater landscape would look totally different if it had formed slowly over billions of years.

Ultimately, as erosion rates go, the continents would erode “into the ocean in about 14 million years.”[i] So how do we still even have continents, if the Earth has been changing for supposedly millions and billions of years?[ii]

Salt-In-OceansPart of the sediments eroding into the water is salt, which is dissolved into sea water and thus giving the oceans a salty taste. So over time, as more erosion occurs, the oceans get saltier. “After 3 billion years, we would expect to see 70x more salt in the ocean than we see today.” 122 million tons of sodium are removed from the oceans each year, but this is not much compared to the 458 million tons that are added in that same time. Current salt levels would have only taken 42 million years to add up.

Again, to uphold an old earth point of view, one would have to claim that the rates of change were a lot different throughout history.[iii]

From an old earth point of view, these sediments and salts would be devastating to the evolution of ocean and land organisms. If the waters had too much sediment or salt, they would not be very suitable for life.

Evolutionists have to make large, extensive assumptions about the history of the Earth, whereas one assumption (accredited by God and history) that there was a massive worldwide flood over a short Earth history is a much simpler solution.

Ocean Sediments and Salts: What do they really tell us? Naturalistic/Evolutionary Perspective

Introduction:

The ocean is salty and full of sediments. How salty is the ocean? How much sediment is in the oceans? Is this evidence that the earth is only thousands and not millions of years old? Why is the ocean salty? Does the saltiness of the ocean fluctuate?

Naturalistic/Evolutionary Answer:

There is not as much sediments in the ocean, as some expect, because seafloor sediments have accumulated at a much slower rate in the past and high levels of tectonic activity would rid the oceans of much of the sediments that had been deposited.[i]

The slower rate of sediment accumulation in the past may be in part due to increased desertification and human influence on the land, like so much deforestation, loss of vegetative cover, and simply hard use of the land. Live Science reports that “human activity causes 10 times more soil erosion than all natural processes combined.”[ii]

Continental DriftSome sediment has subducted into the crust of the earth due to the movement of tectonic plates. Sea floor spreading is the process of the sea floor moving like a conveyor belt with new rock churning up from below and sediments on the ocean floor funneled back into the earth under ocean trenches.[iii]

Oceans have also been in different places in the past and so as continents uplift, submerge, or change over time, the oceans are not constantly stacking up sediment in one place. Ocean floor can uplift and again become landmasses.[iv]

How salty is the ocean? “Some scientists estimate that the oceans contain as much as 50 quadrillion tons (50 million billion tons) of dissolved solids. If the salt in the sea could be removed and spread evenly over the Earth’s land surface it would form a layer more than 500 feet thick .”[v]

The oceans are salty because of the sediments and salts that are constantly washed out into the sea from off of the continents. The oceans are not too salty because today they “probably have a balanced salt input and outgo” because “about the same tonnage of salt from the ocean water probably is deposited as sediment on the ocean bottom.”[vi]

The extensive size of the oceans (about 70% of the Earth’s surface) create challenges in truly understanding everything about the oceans. “The salinity of ocean water varies. It is affected by such factors as the melting of ice, inflow of river water, evaporation, rain, snowfall, wind, wave motion, and ocean currents that cause horizontal and vertical mixing of the saltwater.” It is also possible that “sea life has a strong influence on the composition of sea water.”[vii]

“At least 72 chemical elements have been identified in sea water,” with some more abundant in certain places. Europe, for instance, contributes more salt to the ocean than Australia. In chemistry, when certain chemicals come together, they become insoluble (not dissolvable in water). So those solid salts will gradually fall to the ocean floor.[viii]

Ultimately, there are so many things going on with…the ocean, that there may be many other factors that affect the sediment and salt content of the ocean. Rates and estimations are approximated and so one has to be careful in evaluating, extrapolating, and making conclusions about the age of the ocean.[ix]

Check back tomorrow for the Creation Answer.  Thanks again for your constructive help.

Is the above correct? Do you evolutionists agree with this position? I have tried to write it as you believe it. Do you have any disagreements or concerns or additions?
