The Bible Says …

Our 3 year old grandson, Samuel, was instructed by his mother to put on his pajamas. Samuel grabbed what he had worn the night before. However, his mother said that he shouldn’t because he had spilled water on them earlier and they were wet. Samuel responded by saying, “The Bible says they are not wet.”

Ignoring some of the issues, in a way, I like his approach. Samuel is already banking on the authority of the Scripture and applying it to real life situations. I really wish that many young people today would trust in the authority of the Bible instead of taking the words of friends and teachers above God’s Word. This is especially true regarding moral choices and evolution as well.

Of course, my 3 year old grandson’s “standing on the Word” also illustrates that Christians need to read and study the Bible to adequately wield it in a discussion. Some atheists know the Bible (at least select parts of it) better than many Christians. Sometimes un-prepared Christians find themselves in trouble rather than being “salt and light.”

When we speak at the universities, we frequently find atheists who defend their position by telling us what the Bible says. Many times, they do one of 3 things: misquote the Bible, take the passage out of context, or simply pull something out of thin air.

Although we have heard many arguments utilizing the first two items, we had a very vocal atheist student state why he can’t believe the Bible. He said, “It’s because the Bible says the earth rests on the backs of two turtles.” Of, course, we asked him to show us where it says that in the Bible (It doesn’t.)

So just like this atheist’s appealing to the authority of Scripture (falsely), or with Samuel’s attempt, we must be on our toes! The only way to do that is to know what the Bible actually says first.

I also like to try to figure out how the person got what they say. For the atheist, perhaps he was mixing up eastern mystic religions with Biblical thought. One religion does teach the 2-turtle idea. But where could Samuel have gotten the idea that the Bible says his pajamas were not wet? Perhaps it’s just a 3 year old way to not obey and instead do what he wants. Who can fathom the mind of a 3 year old?  Perhaps he heard in Sunday school, or someplace else, the story of Gideon putting out a fleece (Judges 6: 36-40). Yes, one day the fleece was perfectly dry. Since Samuel had ‘fleece” pajamas, in the 3-year old mind, it could all make sense!

Now you know why we tell students, “Context, context, context! Study the full council of God’s Word.”

Sacred Delight

Last Sunday, a pastor friend shared these song lyrics by a vocal group named Sunday Drive. The lyrics were a great reminder of what Jesus Christ did upon the cross for each and every one of us that believe in Him. Have you come to the Savior in search of His forgiveness?

Sacred Delight

Did you smile when you made the moon
And gave the sky its color?
Did creation dance in rhythm to
Your song of life, I wonder?
Did the angels know you knew my name
Did you tell them out of all you made
Why you gave me your image?

Is it true I’m your heartbeat?
And you love me more than anything?

What sacred delight
What infinite wonder
That I’m precious in Your sight
You love me like no other, no other
Oh, sacred delight

Did you think of me the day you died
That I would dare intend this?
Did you know one day I’d come to you
And search of your forgiveness?

Is it true I’m your heartbeat?
And you chose to die than to live without me?
What sacred delight
What infinite wonder
That I’m precious in your sight
You love me like no other, no other
Oh, sacred delight

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross …” Heb. 12:2a

“I Didn’t Like It – I LOVED It!”

A young girl, about 9 years old, told Mary Jo that she really enjoyed the Creation evening we did with her church group for kids, saying that it was really fun. Mary Jo asked if she enjoyed the teaching session.
The first part of her answer would cause any speaker’s heart to sink. She said, “No, I didn’t like it!”   After a short pause, she added, “I LOVED it!”     Whew!

The same evening, another 4th or 5th grade girl came to Mary Jo with a question after the teaching session. She wanted to know a commonly asked question – “If God made everything, then who made God?” Mary Jo explained that God was eternal—He was always there –He had no beginning and no end –He is from everlasting to everlasting. She said, “Oh, I’ve been wondering about that for a long time.” She then talked about evolution and that even if there was a Big Bang, then “where did that come from?” She was asking the rhetorical question seeing the problem with the naturalistic (no God) perspective.

These kids are smart! But it shows that the evolutionary squeeze is already tightening around the brains and hearts of even elementary school children. I’m glad for the opportunities Mary Jo and I, as well as the rest of our speaking teams at Alpha Omega Institute, have to impact these young geniuses before they are trapped by anti-God philosophy!

Hungry for Answers

Well, that Tuesday (see my last blog “Genesis Series on the Road…“) Sue and I, with the help of our son Joel, taught six hours at Faith Baptist Church in Pawnee City, NE.  The seminars went very well.  I taught one hour on dinosaurs, science, and the Bible, and the next five hours we spent on the Genesis Series. We covered Genesis chapters one and two.  Sue, with her changes to the children’s ministry, was a big hit.  The people at Pawnee were truly “hungry” for the information and requested a continuation of the Genesis Series at a future date.

Two boys, who were in either 5th or 6th grade, came up to me after the last evening’s program wondering if there was another two hour program tomorrow.  I was sorry to say that there wasn’t.   It is very encouraging to see young people getting so enthralled about the Word of God!

From March 8th through the 10th,Sue, Joel, and I were at the Fairview Baptist Church near Towanda, KS.  The pastor scheduled eleven hours of teaching, which is quite unique for us since we normally teach for only four to six hours at a church.  The goal of the seminar was to cover Genesis chapters one through three by teaching two hours on Friday night and another five hours on Saturday.  The plan for Sunday was to teach approximately four hours of my creation science series.

I was not able to finish Genesis chapter three Saturday afternoon, and the interest was so great, that many attendees requested two more hours on Sunday afternoon to allow us to finish the chapter!   We were amazed!  Thirteen hours of teaching in one night and two days.  Sue ended up teaching eleven hours for the children.  People of this country are hungry for the foundational teachings of Scripture and science!

Answered Prayers

Last summer we took our 6 year old (at that time) grandson to a local Bible camp where we were teaching. We were blessed to be able to lead him to the Lord that week. We were also blessed to be there for his professing his faith through baptism just last month.

Last Easter our oldest granddaughter (now 6 years old) gave her life to the Lord, and this past Sunday at her church she went forward requesting baptism. She will be baptized on Easter morning!

This is answered prayer for me and my wife. You see, I never prayed for my children’s salvation, because both were saved before I became a believer. However, since I put my faith and trust in Jesus, I have continuously prayed for my grandchildren, that they might also accept the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

God has answered my prayers for three of my grandchildren! The remaining two are still very young, but I will continue to pray for them!

Flying Woes

A funny thing happened to me on my way to Wichita. Actually, no joke.

Mary Jo, Scott and I drove from Grand Junction to Salt Lake City for a homeschool conference. We had planned for me to speak on Friday night, Mary Jo would speak Saturday morning while I flew to Wichita to be picked up for a 3 day seminar in Kansas.

I arrived at the airport in Salt Lake City surprised to see a huge line for United Airlines. After waiting in line for quite a while, I spotted an unused kiosk to print my boarding passes. When they popped out, a notice on the screen alerted me that my Salt Lake to Denver leg was on time, but the next flight from Denver to Wichita was cancelled. That threw me into scramble mode, as the Kansas group had planned this seminar more than 2 years earlier and I was the only speaker. I don’t like missing seminars!

Snow storms in the Denver area had already caused 218 flights out of Denver to be cancelled. I asked the ticket agent how they expected my flight to Denver to be able to land if they can’t take off. “Good question!” he replied. I queried further as to where it would land if it couldn’t land in Denver. “Back to Salt Lake or to Grand Junction.” Hmmmm… back to where I started. A lot of good that would do me!  (By the end of that day over 600 flights out of Denver were cancelled!)

Even though the airline doesn’t have to accommodate reroutes when flights are cancelled due to weather, United was at least able to get me onto a Delta Airline flight from Salt Lake City direct to Kansas City, MO.  No flights were available to Wichita.

After several phone calls, my ride was on track to get me in Kansas City, MO.

Thanks Abe for being flexible and for driving 4 hours each way to do so!

Dawkins Becomes a Creationist??

I recently read a blog article entitled, “Dawkins becomes a Creationist.”

The title certainly jerked my head into reading position as I had great hopes that the prolific, atheism-promoting writer, Richard Dawkins, saw the true light. However, the blog article was written by Dr. Karen Dawkins who, as an evolutionist, evolved into a creationist during her college years as a result of seeing evidence for creation and the problems with evolution. She later received her Doctorate from veterinary school, practiced small animal medicine, had a small animal emergency practice, and worked as a pathologist in a toxicology research laboratory.

One creature she mentioned as having had an impact on her thinking is the amazing woodpecker. It also opened up many other unanswered issues of evolution.

She is not the only one who had to give up on evolution after contemplating the tremendous design of the woodpecker. Lanny Johnson, who heads up the children’s department with his wife, Marilyn, also had to come to grips with the implications of the design of the woodpecker, after hearing Mary Jo talk about it at one of our seminars many years ago. It was the door opening for him to re-evaluate his 20 years of Atheism.

I would hope that the remarkable design of the woodpecker, that is so obvious, would continue to peck many more holes in evolutionary philosophy and turn many minds and hearts to our Creator God .

Genesis Series on the Road…

We had a wonderful time at Sheridan Lake, CO, teaching and having fellowship with the saints.  We taught eleven hours at Sheridan Lake Bible Church, and nine of those eleven hours were spent teaching Genesis chapters one through three.  Even with the nine hours of teaching, we did not quite finish Genesis chapter three.  It was a casual time of teaching, and during the teaching I enjoyed answering various questions they had about Genesis and creation in general.  After all was done, the pastor shared his thoughts about the importance of taking Genesis literally and not falling for the wisdom of the world.

The following Tuesday evening we started teaching at Faith Baptist Church located in Pawnee City, NE.  Since I was just here last year, and taught my creation science series, I thought I would teach my Genesis series.  While I taught the young people and adults, my wife Sue, taught the children.  She is improving her programs by incorporating creation science power point presentations into her time with the children.  She is excited about the changes and so are the children.

I truly enjoy teaching the Genesis series, because Genesis proclaims many of the scientific concepts and laws modern scientists have just discovered in the last few hundred years.  In other words, Genesis is relevant to scientific discovery and things we observe today.  I was always taught that “the present is the key to the past,” but that worldview can cause many scientific mistakes.  The truth is “the past is the key to the present,” and this is why Genesis is so important for scientific research today.  Stay tuned for more from the Genesis Road Show.

Dr. Duane Gish

I am sad to report that one of the key leaders in the Creation ministry passed away last week on March 6.

Dr. Duane Gish will certainly be remembered by Mary Jo & I. His book, Evolution, The Fossils Say No, changed our lives. Mary Jo & I believed in evolution years ago, when we picked up his book on the fossil record. That caused us to really begin thinking for ourselves, reevaluate our perspective, do our own research, and then led us not only to reject our beliefs in evolution, but eventually to embark on telling others through our ministry with Alpha Omega Institute. Dr. Gish always liked to have us share that when we were together at a ministry event. He’d say, “Tell them about my book.”

Dr. Gish was also noted as being Creation’s “Bulldog” as he championed the cause through hundreds of debates with evolutionists. He caught many challengers off guard with his encyclopedic scientific knowledge of evolution and what was wrong with the latest evolutionary arguments. Many evolutionists began to warn others that they should not debate Dr. Duane Gish as they would certainly not win.

Mary Jo & I were not only blessed by his extreme intellectual abilities, but also with his friendship over the years, his love of the Lord Jesus, as well as his contagious humor.

I am sure that we are not alone. Many people have also been impacted by his original book as well as the later editions, through his debates, his seminars, and through his life. The abundant fruit of his ministry will be quite noticeable in Heaven.

We certainly will miss this great man of God who changed our lives!

Not Realizing What a Wonderful Possession We Have

A Pastor friend recently told me this story (my paraphrase):

There once was a man named Waylon Pendergrass (a fictitious name not meant to incriminate any particular individual) who went out partying one evening and became rip-roaring drunk. In his drunken stupor, he decided to increase his income by committing burglary.

Waylon drove around the town neighborhoods for quite some time until he finally came upon a house that was completely dark. Seeing no vehicle in the driveway of said house, he came to the conclusion that nobody was at home, therefore a perfect place for his larcenous intent.

Waylon staggered around to the back of the house and smashed in a low lying window. After struggling through the broken opening, Waylon proceeded to stumble through the dark house collecting valuables which he stuffed into a bag. Once the bag was full, he then reeled back through the house and exited through the window by which he had entered.

Upon reaching his car, Waylon noticed that his burglary gloves were lying on the front seat. In a brief moment of sobriety, he realized that he had left fingerprint evidence throughout the house, which would surely point to his guilt. Already having a criminal record and not wanting to return to the “joint”, Waylon decided the best course of action would be to destroy the evidence, where upon he set the house on fire.

As Waylon drove away from the house, he had the thought that if he drove around the town in a random manner for awhile, he might further confuse the authorities. After wandering around the town for a short time, he became very drowsy and felt it was now safe to go to his home.

As he approached home, he was aghast to see his house surrounded by fire engines and police cars … his own house was on fire. Waylon realized that he had burglarized and torched his own home!

An alert police detective spotted Waylon, and upon approaching the vehicle saw the bag of “loot” in the back seat. Knowing Waylon’s background, the detective began to pull the stolen items out of the bag and laid them upon the hood of the car. Amazed at what he saw lying before him, Waylon stated, “Wow, I didn’t know I owned such good stuff!”

Moral of the story – how many times as Christians do we not know the wonderful possession we have in Jesus Christ. “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;” Eph 1:7
