…On The Right Track In Genesis

Below is a segment from a letter I just received from my translator in India.  A few years ago, he translated my Genesis series over a period of two weeks for a number of Bible colleges and seminaries.

…Hope you are keeping well as I do here by His grace. I just want to say…………….You have been the mentor of life. Though I did not realize it earlier. Now it feels great to have someone who guided me to the right track in life. Thanks for being my teacher and guiding me towards the right path of life. I am grateful to you. With a great teacher like you, I was sure that life would be a successful journey but I never knew you will also make the journey to success such a cakewalk. I can’t express my gratitude Sir!

Thanks for the love and the concerns you do have for me.

The conclusion of his letter is not me, but the information which was taught.  I was only with him for a few days, and what I taught was mostly Genesis chapters one through three and creation science.  The Bible and the Holy Spirit are our guide and his.  I believe if you get started on the right track in Genesis, it will help you stay on track with the rest of Scripture and the journey of life.  To God be the Glory!

Surveying Destruction And Beauty – While On A Discover Creation Raft Trip

Last week, Mary Jo & I led a Discover Creation Green River Raft Trip.  AOI co-sponsored the trip along with Journey Quest, a new Christian wilderness ministry and rafting company our son is helping develop. Everything went very well. We were blessed with safety, health, energy, good weather, good attitudes, great fellowship, and good learning for both the participants and the instructors! This was meant to be an exploratory trip as we had never physically explored the geology of that section of the river. We enjoyed camping in the wilderness while exploring the geology and seeing evidence of the Flood and God’s restorative power after the destruction. We also enjoyed teaching/learning more about God’s creation, and digging into His Word with fellow travelers.

Besides the landforms and geology, we saw several groups of wild horses, groups of desert big horn sheep, deer, coyotes, lots of lizards, snakes (but no rattlesnakes),  a few very old homesteads, a fossil imprint of a turtle, and drawings made by American Indians on the sandstone walls.

Mary Jo and I camped out in a tent as we are not too fond of the idea of sharing our sleeping bags with an unwelcome critter. Some of the brave ones in our group went without tents, so they could enjoy the stars since the weather was so cooperative. The days were spent floating down the river, shooting rapids, and enjoying the “mini”-lectures (we hope) and the beauty of the area.

So why do we do field trips and, in this case, the raft trip? Over the last few years, we have had many students tell us that seeing and experiencing the places we talk about not only cemented the truth of Creation for them, but also the truth of the Bible. I think all 30 of the raft trip participants, including staff, got a much bigger, hands-on feel for the scope of the Flood and how it and the aftermath of it shaped our present world.

If you want to be notified of the next field or raft trip, send an email to aoi@discovercreation.org.

Children Being Deceived

As I travel around the world and in the United States,  I have come in contact with concerned parents and people who talk to me in person, by email, or even call me about a loved one or a person they know who is leaving the church and rejecting the truth taught in Scripture…. because of evolution.   Many times they are at a loss of what they can do.   First, I explain to them the vast amount of scientific evidence in support of creation and also the overwhelming amount of scientific evidence refuting evolution.  Most people comment that they did not know about any of this evidence, and wish they would have known sooner.  I refer them to our website for more information and also to view the many resources available in book or DVD on this topic.

Secondly, there is more to this debate than just science.  There is a spiritual aspect.  This is where I believe most of the problem lies.  Who is in authority in your life?  Creation and the Bible states that God is the authority, but evolution states man or might is the authority.   Many people do not want to be under the authority of God, so they look for an alternate world view.

But there is a third aspect which I will unveil later in my Genesis Series.  I am working on this project as I write.  When these concerned people realize the aspects of this debate, then they understand what is really happening.  Again their reply is…. I have never heard this information before!  We need to know this!

So Alpha Omega Institute is working to proclaim the truth so people can understand the whole picture.  By knowing the truth, people can be set free!

Bill Nye: Creationism Is Not Appropriate For Children

When Marilyn and I first joined AOI, there was a very popular Disney/PBS children’s science show on television (1993 to 1998) called “Bill Nye the Science Guy.” Nye was very entertaining and made learning science fun for kids. However, every chance he got, he would interject his worldview of evolution. For years, I would warn children to be careful watching Nye because of what he taught on evolution. After his show was dropped in 1998, we didn’t see him much on public television for children, and so I quit mentioning him in my talks.

However, he is back in the spotlight with an anti-creation clip on You Tube labeled “Bill Nye: Creationism Is Not Appropriate For Children.”

I could spend a lot of time and space refuting Nye’s claims. However, Creation Ministries International has put out a video that refutes it so well, that I recommend having you view their comeback on You Tube - CMI: Evolutionism is not appropriate for anyone.

A Long Fruitful Summer

Bowing before the Lord…

Praise the Lord … we made it through a very long, hot, and busy summer. We had to rely on the strength of God every bit of the way, and He sustained us.

We began by doing 2 ½ weeks of Rodeo Bible Camp. Checkout the blogs we posted on: the Rodeo Bible Camp; the Junior Rodeo Bible Camp; and the Pee-Wee Rodeo Bible Camp.

We did 1 family Vacation Bible School and 1 children’s VBS in South Dakota.  See the Two for One post for a little more on that trip. In the morning we did a VBS on the Rosebud Indian Reservation, then moved all our equipment and set up to do an evening VBS at the sponsoring church. It was a jam packed week! Then it was on to do another weeklong family VBS in eastern Colorado.

Tears of Joy for Salvation!

This was followed by 4 weeks of Bible Camp in Colorado (only 45 minutes away from our house, so able to get home on weekends). We then flew (and there are some challenges in flying for us) to Oregon to do another a week of Bible Camp. Amongst all the VBS’s and Bible Camps we were able to squeeze in 11 days of teaching at different churches.

One of the blessings of this summer was to be able to disciple and encourage hundreds of children and adults, and witness 86 children put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ.

Yes we are tired, but below is an encouraging note we received from a parent that makes it all worthwhile:

Dear Lanny and Marilyn

I just wanted you to know how grateful I am for the sacrifice of time, energy, comfort, etc. that you gave to teaching at ________. I so appreciate that all of my children sat under your teaching and received sound, biblical, creation-oriented, God-honoring information that continues to solidify their worldview. We’ve had discussions about what they reviewed and what was new information and we’ve also talked about what a privilege it is to hear truth that is consistent with the Scriptures vs. only growing up with a humanistic, evolutionary mindset and having to learn what is really real. I so appreciate your heart for ministry to kids of all ages. Thank you for reinforcing what we are teaching our children and for encouraging them in word and deed in the Love of Christ.  __ __

Dinosaurs, Monuments, and The Gospel

On Monday, August 27th, I had the great opportunity to host both a Colorado National Monument tour and a Dinosaur Journey Museum tour for Mountain Valley Christian Academy.  The day started at 9:00 am at the monument with a presentation explaining the landscape by the evolutionary model and then by the creation/flood model.  We talked about the effects of the flood on geology.  The creation/flood model fits so much better with the observed data.

After finishing at the monument we drove into Fruita, CO, for a one and a half hour dinosaur program.  The program consisted of information about ancient civilizations living with the dinosaurs, as well as the many discoveries of soft tissue found in dinosaur bones.  We also explained how dinosaurs could grow to such gigantic sizes when they hatched from such small eggs.  We ended the presentation with what happened to all the dinosaurs.   To explain all this and much more, we then turned to both science and the Bible. Teaching about dinosaurs is an excellent way to proclaim the gospel!

After lunch, we finished the day with a museum tour.  The museum is a wonderful place to reveal God’s incredible design in dinosaurs, the consequences of Adam’s sin on the world, and much, much more.  We all had a great day of discovering God’s incredible creation, and learning more about God and His unfathomable love for us!

Ancient Plant Fruit in Siberia

I was sent an article regarding the discovery of ancient plant fruit found in Siberia. It was supposedly 32,000 years old and they were able to grow a plant from it. Somebody suggested I write a blog on it. Dozens could be written, but I’m not a botanist. So I asked Stephen B. Austin, who has been a valuable volunteer with AOI, about it. He is well noted in Colorado for his botanical knowledge.  His comments follow:

“I was surprised to read about the discovery of the fruits of that “campion plant” in the frozen tundra of northeastern Siberia.

It would be most interesting to see if it is identical to an existing plant of that family and genus that is growing today.

Some observations:

1. I do not accept the date of 32,000 years, because of the inaccuracies of carbon dating, especially that far back.

2. The Noahic Flood produced unusual conditions about 4,500 years ago, such as abnormally warm arctic oceans. As you know, Michael Oard has written about such conditions, especially in regard to the existence of huge Mammoth herds in the Arctic, and how they more than likely met their demise. (“Frozen in Time” by Michael Oard is one such writing)

3. There have been other ancient seeds found in such places as the Egyptian pyramids, and how those seeds have germinated. It is my belief that the most ancient of the Egyptian pyramids were more than likely built in the decades and immediate centuries following the Noahic Flood, when life spans were still rather lengthy and technologies hadn’t been lost. The seeds in the Egyptian pyramid were some sort of grain crop.

4. Technologies back then were quite amazing. One case in point I remember is the ancient map of Antarctica (Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings) revealing an almost precise coastline of that continent. We were not able to determine that coastline until we developed satellite technology and were able to see beneath the ice existing there today. No doubt that map was produced within the few hundred years following the Noahic Flood, when glacial ice had not yet totally covered Antarctica. (See page 3 of the March/April 2012 Think & Believe for some additional info on this)

Thanks, Steve!  What tremendous design by our awesome God!  I find it exciting for a plant to be able to grow from very ancient fruit, even with an age correction of no more than 4500 years as evidenced not only by the Biblical history, but as well,  by the ancient mapping of Antarctica since then.

To the right is a modern Campion. To see the “ancient” one and for more information on the discovery, see their article.

Why We Shoot Deer

I am a hunter and an amateur roper (just learning actually), so when a friend sent this to me, I just had to share it with others. I hope you see the humor in it as I do (no offense to my vegetarian friends) … but most of all realize that we are never too old to learn something new.

WHY WE SHOOT DEER

Why we shoot deer in the wild (A letter from someone who wants to remain anonymous, who farms, writes well and actually tried this).I had this idea that I could rope a deer, put it in a stall, feed it up on corn for a couple of weeks, then kill it and eat it. The first step in this adventure was getting a deer. I figured that, since they congregate at my cattle feeder and do not seem to have much fear of me when we are there (a bold one will sometimes come right up and sniff at the bags of feed while I am in the back of the truck not 4 feet away), it should not be difficult to rope one, get up to it and toss a bag over its head (to calm it down) then hog tie it and transport it home.

I filled the cattle feeder then hid down at the end with my rope. The cattle, having seen the roping thing before, stayed well back. They were not having any of it. After about 20 minutes, my deer showed up -3 of them. I picked out a likely looking one, stepped out from the end of the feeder, and threw my rope. The deer just stood there and stared at me. I wrapped the rope around my waist and twisted the end so I would have a good hold.

The deer still just stood and stared at me, but you could tell it was mildly concerned about the whole rope situation. I took a step towards it, it took a step away. I put a little tension on the rope .., and then received an education. The first thing that I learned is that, while a deer may just stand there looking at you funny while you rope it, they are spurred to action when you start pulling on that rope.

That deer EXPLODED. The second thing I learned is that pound for pound, a deer is a LOT stronger than a cow or a colt. A cow or a colt in that weight range I could fight down with a rope and with some dignity. A deer– no Chance. That thing ran and bucked and twisted and pulled. There was no controlling it and certainly no getting close to it. As it jerked me off my feet and started dragging me across the ground, it occurred to me that having a deer on a rope was not nearly as good an idea as I had originally imagined. The only upside is that they do not have as much stamina as many other animals.

A brief 10 minutes later, it was tired and not nearly as quick to jerk me off my feet and drag me when I managed to get up. It took me a few minutes to realize this, since I was mostly blinded by the blood flowing out of the big gash in my head. At that point, I had lost my taste for corn-fed venison. I just wanted to get that devil creature off the end of that rope.

I figured if I just let it go with the rope hanging around its neck, it would likely die slow and painfully somewhere. At the time, there was no love at all between me and that deer. At that moment, I hated the thing, and I would venture a guess that the feeling was mutual. Despite the gash in my head and the several large knots where I had cleverly arrested the deer’s momentum by bracing my head against various large rocks as it dragged me across the ground, I could still think clearly enough to recognize that there was a small chance that I shared some tiny amount of responsibility for the situation we were in. I didn’t want the deer to have to suffer a slow death, so I managed to get it lined back up in between my truck and the feeder – a little trap I had set before hand…kind of like a squeeze chute. I got it to back in there and I started moving up so I could get my rope back.

Did you know that deer bite?

They do! I never in a million years would have thought that a deer would bite somebody, so I was very surprised when …… I reached up there to grab that rope and the deer grabbed hold of my wrist. Now, when a deer bites you, it is not like being bit by a horse where they just bite you and slide off to then let go. A deer bites you and shakes its head–almost like a pit bull. They bite HARD and it hurts.

The proper thing to do when a deer bites you is probably to freeze and draw back slowly. I tried screaming and shaking instead. My method was ineffective.

It seems like the deer was biting and shaking for several minutes, but it was likely only several seconds. I, being smarter than a deer (though you may be questioning that claim by now), tricked it. While I kept it busy tearing the tendons out of my right arm, I reached up with my left hand and pulled that rope loose.

That was when I got my final lesson in deer behavior for the day. Deer will strike at you with their front feet. They rear right up on their back feet and strike right about head and shoulder level, and their hooves are surprisingly sharp … I learned a long time ago that, when an animal – like a horse – strikes at you with their hooves and you can’t get away easily, the best thing to do is try to make a loud noise and make an aggressive move towards the animal. This will usually cause them to back down a bit so you can escape.

This was not a horse. This was a deer, so obviously, such trickery would not work. In the course of a millisecond, I devised a different strategy. I screamed like a woman and tried to turn and run. The reason I had always been told NOT to try to turn and run from a horse that paws at you is that there is a good chance that it will hit you in the back of the head. Deer may not be so different from horses after all, besides being twice as strong and 3 times as evil, because the second I turned to run, it hit me right in the back of the head and knocked me down.

Now, when a deer paws at you and knocks you down, it does not immediately leave. I suspect it does not recognize that the danger has passed. What they do instead is paw your back and jump up and down on you while you are laying there crying like a little girl and covering your head.

I finally managed to crawl under the truck and the deer went away. So now I know why when people go deer hunting they bring a rifle with a scope……to sort of even the odds!!

All these events are true so help me God…

Solar Flares Affect Radioactive Decay Rates

An article in the August 13 Science Daily reports on research in progress by Purdue University physicists which could lead to ways of protecting satellite and Earth communication/energy systems and even give warnings to astronauts on space missions . The danger is in the neutrino emissions from solar flares which have knocked out equipment in the past and exposed astronauts to extreme radiation. The researchers are working on technology which could warn of solar activity so we could prevent damage from serious solar flares.

NOTE: The key element of this research has spinoffs to the reliability of radioactive decay dating methods. It appears that solar flares are preceded by particle emission which changes the decay rate of radioactive elements! Since that can be measured, a sudden increase of the decay rate will warn of radiation danger from a flare.

Why is this significant to radioactive decay dating? One of the huge assumptions (and supposedly “proven” facts of science) for the radioactive dating methods is a constant decay rate. If this is not true, then “absolute” dating methods aren’t as reliable as presented. This present research actually documents not only changes in the decay rate preceding a solar flare, but also seasonal fluctuations of the decay rate! Although the measured variations are not huge, this opens the door for research on other ways decay rates can be altered. Therefore, this is very significant research!

I will be looking into this more and try to report on it in the next issue of Think & Believe. So stay tuned!

An X-class flare such as this one, if directed at the earth, could be deadly on electronic equipment including aircraft/ship navigation and power systems. This burst from the sun was on Aug. 9, 2011 as seen by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) satellite.

Training The Future Generation

I spent two weeks helping with the children’s program at Camp Redcloud.  We had from 12-18 children each day.  They were an active, fun, and enthusiastic group.  One of the favorite activities is always making sock puppets.  The children enjoy performing with them for their parents on Thursday during the variety show.

Some of the older children (age 11-13) , who had been in the program in previous years, enjoyed being able to be helpers as well.  Some are very interested and quite knowledgeable about creation issues.  A few children gave short presentations to the class about certain animals they had studied.  Alan and Diane Galbraith, directors of the children’s program at Camp Redcloud, recognize the importance of training the future generation to be leaders in creation teaching.  It was a blessing to assist them in this endeavor.
