8th Day Circumcision

In Genesis 17:12,  God commanded Abraham to circumcise newborns males on the eighth day. “And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you,… “ Genesis 17:12.

Why the 8th day? In Judaism, circumcision is considered a symbol of the covenant between God and the Jewish people. The act of circumcision is called the bris, which literally means “covenant.” One reason the circumcision is performed on the eighth day is so that if the newborn baby will have lived through a complete week which includes a Sabbath. Once the baby has experienced the “holiness” of a Sabbath, he may enter into the covenant of the Jewish people.

Another reason for the 8th day deals with blood clotting. Blood clotting is dependent on 3 factors: platelets, prothrombin, and vitamin K (which is responsible for prothrombin production and is produced by bacteria in the intestinal tract). Holt and McIntosh, in their classic work, Holt Pediatrics, observed that a newborn infant has “peculiar susceptibility to bleeding between the second and fifth days of life. … Hemorrhages at this time, though often inconsequential, are sometimes extensive; they may produce serious damage to internal organs, especially to the brain, and cause death from shock and exsanguination” (1953, pp. 125-126).

It has been shown that it is on the fifth through the seventh days of the newborn male’s life that vitamin K is present in adequate quantities for blood clotting.

On the eighth day, the amount of prothrombin present is above one-hundred percent of normal (the only day in the male’s life in which this will be normally be the case). Therefore, the 8th day is the perfect day to do the circumcision … when the Vitamin K and prothrombin levels are at their peak.

And once again the Bible reveals a great deal of scientific truth written hundreds, and sometimes thousands of years before being “discovered” by modern scientists.

Giving Thanks Where Thanks Are Due!

I received the following forwarded email from one of our good Creationist friends who used to work at NASA.  Many times there is a lot of bogus information in forwarded emails, but this is reputed even by Snopes to be genuine. What I would like to add with this, is that the communion “service” mentioned is just a taste of what we should be doing daily – communing regularly with our Creator – the One who not only created the moon, but the whole Heavens and Earth! He is also our God, Who wants to commune with us!

Today marks the 43rd anniversary of the first lunar landing.  In 1969, July 20 was a Sunday.

After safing the Lunar Module following touchdown, and making sure that all systems were ready for an emergency liftoff, the crew activity plan called   for a couple of hours of rest before Neil Armstrong would become the first man to walk on the moon.  Early in this “rest period” something happened that is not widely known.  Buzz Aldrin was an Elder in the Webster Presbyterian Church near the Johnson Space  Center.  As part of his personal gear Buzz had packed a small communion service.  Aldrin informed Mission   Control that he wanted a few minutes of radio silence.  During this time Buzz read John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing,” then he ate a communion wafer and drank a small cup of wine.  Neil did not participate but maintained a respectful silence.  Thus the first food consumed on the surface of the moon was a communion service.

The event was low-key and done during a communication blackout because NASA was being sued by Atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair over the earlier Apollo 8 reading of Genesis 1 by Frank Borman on Christmas Eve, when the Command and Service Module made the first circumnavigation (went around the moon) prior to its return to earth.

Buzz may have draw his inspiration from Christopher Columbus, who celebrated his discovery of the new world by taking communion.
For more information, you check out Snopes on the subject  and also an article from USA Today.

My Missionary Lizards

Pastor Ramon invited me and a variety of Bible teachers from Mexico to teach at a youth convention which was being held at the Nogales Baptist Seminary in Nogales, MX.  Over one hundred youth attended the event.  Many more signed up to attend, but were unfortunately turned down, due to lack of room.  I observed in the youth of Mexico a desire to know the truth.   Both young and old around the world have an interest in creation, especially the subject of dinosaurs.

After finishing up my dinosaur presentation, one of the kids was concerned about where he would spend eternity.  He approached Pastor Ramon wanting to talk to him about salvation.  Pastor Ramon led the youngster to the Lord!  I know of at least two  who trusted Jesus as their Saviour during the conference.  By knowing the truth about dinosaurs, they will truly glorify the LORD.  I frequently refer to dinosaurs as my missionary lizards.  During the conference, Pastor Ramon noticed an excitement in the attendees to learn more about the Bible.  He has seen on many occasions that the youth were not very interested in the Biblical account, but at this conference there was an enthusiasm about knowing more!

Down, But Not Out!

One Sunday morning, a few weeks ago, I was traveling to Gateway, CO to teach at the Wayside Chapel.  After passing many of the fire fighting vehicles on their way to fight a forest fire west of Gateway, I heard a bang coming out from my vehicle.  At first I thought I had blown one of my tires, but the truck I was driving did not give that impression.  Then I noticed what I thought was burning rubber coming from the front of the vehicle.

Quickly coming to a stop, I checked all the tires.  They checked out just fine.  Next, I thought the problem must be under the hood.  I knew the situation was bad when I saw the serpentine belt lying on top of the engine.  Antifreeze was everywhere and the fan was in the radiator.  This was not a good sign!  Analyzing the situation, I discovered that the water pump bearing went out and had subsequently caused the fan to fall into the radiator.  This caused major damage to both the radiator and fan, leaving parts of the fan blades along the road.

Usually there is a warning when the water pump is going bad, such as an antifreeze leak or noisy bearing… but not this time.  I had a cell phone; I’ll just call for re-enforcements, right?  Wrong!  I am in the mountains and in the middle of nowhere.  No cell phone service here.  So I would have to find help the old fashioned way…  by walking to nearby residents!  With a quick prayer, asking for God’s intervention in this situation, I headed for my first target.

As I walked up the steps to the house, I was thinking that people would be eager to help a man wearing a suit and cowboy boots.  After knocking on the door, I began to hear noises inside.  I am in luck!  The lady quickly asked, “What’s your name?”  “Richard Stepanek,” I replied.  She then abruptly stated, “I don’t know you, I can’t help you!”  “But mam, my vehicle is broke down on the road,” I insisted.  “I don’t know you, I can’t help you!” she replied again.  I retreated from my first attempt for help.  I probably scared the poor lady half to death.  So much for my suit and tie.

The next house did not help either, as there was no one home, and the third place had a ‘beware of dog’ sign.  Being an ex-rural mail deliverer, I have learned that strange dogs and I just do not mix well together.  So I decided to skip that house.  As I was walking to the next place, a man and his wife driving by stopped and asked if I needed help.  I informed them of my situation and they were eager to help since they attended the Wayside Chapel.

I was glad I left extra early that morning for the drive to Gateway, even with all the delays I was only fifteen minutes late.  The people attending Wayside Chapel were extremely helpful, and they even helped me tow my vehicle to a safe location off the road.   I praise the Lord that I could perform the repairs myself.  After $850.00 of parts, and about two days of work, my truck was up and running again.  These are just some of the obstacles we get as a traveling ministry, but God is always faithful to see us through.

A Bruiser of a Fish

Recently, at a Bible camp where I was teaching, a man told me about a fossilized fish that had been discovered just north of Grand Junction, Colorado where I live. Being on the road so often, I had not heard of this discovery. So this morning, using the power of the internet, I went on a fishing trip looking for news of this fish. What I discovered was an article written on April 30, 2012 - “Evidence of pugnacious prehistoric fish unearthed.”

From the “bits and pieces” found so far, amazing stories have already emerged … “A nasty bruiser of a prehistoric fish, with sharp teeth jutting from his prominent jaw giving him a pugnacious glower, xiphactinus patrolled the shallow seas of what now is western Colorado some 85 million years ago. Under circumstances unknown, though, the body of an individual xiphactinus settled, dead, to the floor of the Western Interior Seaway, possibly as a result of a shark attack, sometime in the late Cretaceous Period.”

I understand that the supposed age, why they would assume this fish swam around 85 million years ago, is because of the evolutionary uniformitarian dating methods . But how on earth did they know it was killed by a shark? The answer according to a representative of Dinosaur Journey in Fruita, Colorado … “The search even yielded a clue as to the creature’s passing — a shark tooth evidently shed during feeding.” (underline mine).

“Evidently”?  According to Wikipedia, not only do sharks constantly shed their teeth, but their teeth are also a very common fossil in many geologic formations. So why was this bruiser of a fish determined to have to been killed by a shark? Because of a tooth?

While looking up a picture of xiphactinus to use with this blog  I came across the famous picture of the “fish within a fish” (pictured above) and the statement, “a 6 foot long fish in its gut. This was clearly its last meal, and most likely what killed it. …” (underline mine).

Because of the worldview of evolution, a biblical view of a catastrophic flood killing these critters is never mentioned. Yet, as so often has been shown, the world wide global Flood in the days of Noah, shows a better evidential method than the secular guesses.

I am anxiously waiting for the final “story” of this fish when it is displayed at Dinosaur Journey.

Be like an Aspen Leaf

Good friends of ours were visiting with us recently. While up on the Grand Mesa, she was walking and praying in a beautiful area with a lot of beautiful Quaking Aspen trees. Quaking Aspens derive its name from the fact that the leaves quiver at the slightest breeze. Her prayer that morning was that she and all of her household, as well as the families at AOI, would be like the Aspen, and that we would be sensitive to the slightest movement of the spirit of God, going in whatever direction He wishes for us. She said that the greatest part of all this, is that this is exactly what God wants for us, as well.

As I think about what she shared, I would think that that is a wonderful prayer for each of us and for those reading this. Be like an Aspen leaf – ready to move at His movement. Not ahead of him, not behind Him, but with Him.

“Genesis and science go hand in hand”

Last month I had the opportunity to teach at Camp Salvation, which is located near Weston, CO.   It was the camp’s senior high week with about 60-70 campers attending.  I had a good week teaching my Genesis Series, and interacting with the campers and staff.  While playing games, I painfully discovered that I am not as fast as I once was.

Many campers were amazed to discover how scientific the book of Genesis really is.  One young lady, who is very interested in science, was delighted to hear that Genesis and science go hand in hand.  Another camper informed me about some of his classmates that were falling from the faith because of evolution.  He even expressed that he was beginning to doubt the Bible.  The arguments his teacher was using to discredit the Bible were easily refuted by science.

The sad thing about all of this is how many young people are rejecting Scripture and Jesus Christ because of false teachings which are promoted as truth.  The good news in all this was over 12 campers trusted Jesus Christ, who is the Creator, as their Saviour.

“God Particle Found,” But Still A Ways Off From Finding God

A friend of mine wrote me the following after the newspaper article above recently came out saying that scientists are “close” to finding the predicted God particle to explain the origin of the universe without God. I certainly agree with Dave Pierson. I, too, have the answer to the mystery of the formation of the universe as given in the verses he mentioned as well as what is found in the first verse of the Bible, Genesis 1:1.

Dave Pierson wrote:

“In Psalm 33:6,9 The Word says “By the Word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth” (v6) and in verse 9 “…He spake, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast!”

Note the last paragraph in the news article: after spending two generations of study and $10,000,000,000 it says, “…the dream is to find an ultimate theory that explains everything.  We are far from that!”  Every article I have read over the past 35/40 years concerning this subject matter always has qualifying verbs and adjectives.  The headlines scream at you:  “Eureka” we have made a startling discovery, but when you read the fine print they always admit they have a long way to go to finding the truth!

The world just can’t accept that the Almighty created all that is seen and unseen from nothing.  That’s a concept that we mere mortals can’t comprehend and never will this side of Eternity!

Psalm 19 and 33 are good enough for me. A lot of money can be saved and spent on the poor if the world would accept those truths found in the Word of God!”

Take a look as well at a quick response from Spike Psarris to the finding of the Higgs Boson.

Uniformitarianism – A Big Guess

I irrigate my property for 7 months a year with a system which gets its water from the Gunnison River. I have a settling pond that the water runs into – much of the silt and mud carried by the water settles out here before the water travels on to a larger holding pond that I pump the water out of for irrigation. Because the branch of supply water is at the end of a line, without this settling pond, the pipes and sprinklers carrying the water would plug up with mud and silt in a very short time.

Sediment that was removed from the settling pond.

About every year, I need to remove the built up mud and silt from the settling pond. Last year we had abundant snow in the mountains that supply the Gunnison River, resulting in a high spring runoff carrying a lot of silt and mud. This year we are in a drought, resulting in a low spring runoff … thus a lot less mud and silt to settle out in the settling pond. When I remove the silt and mud this year, I expect to get only one quarter (1/4) – if that much – of the amount I removed last year.

Herein lies a huge problem for uniformitarian types of dating methods.  Uniformitarianism basically states, “The present is the key to the past.”  Many secular geologists observe what they see today and then extrapolate that into the past. They believe that slow and gradual processes have created the geology we see today.

Settling pond after the removal of sediment with a 4 ft measuring stick.

If you were to observe the amount of mud accumulated this year, and try to extrapolate it into the past, then by measuring the amount of mud accumulated last year (and assuming you were not there to observe its deposition), you would come up with a date about 3 to 4 times longer than actuality.

Now some would argue that we can observe deposition rates for several years to establish an average rate of deposition.  However, can that rate be extrapolated back millions and millions of years … would not catastrophic floods, tsunamis, volcanoes, and mudslides have a drastic affect on that extrapolation?

The Bible gives a historical account of a catastrophe that reshaped the world – the Flood. The geology we observe today fits a cataclysm such as the global Flood. As Andrew Snelling (Noah’s Flood and the Age of the Earth, 2009) said, “The past is the key to the present” not “The present is the key to the past.” The Bible explains the geology we see today in a way Uniformitarianism cannot.
