Does the Bible Teach a Flat Earth?

Today most all Creation scientists and secular scientists believe the earth is a sphere. However, the belief that the earth is flat has been believed by many ancient “pre-scientific” cultures (Greece, India, China, and aboriginal cultures of the Americas). As a side note, it has been shown that European’s belief in a flat earth during the time of Columbus is a myth. In 330 BC, Aristotle suggested that the earth might be a sphere. See the wikipedia article.

Interestingly, since 1956 there is an International Flat Earth Society that continues to further the belief that the earth is flat.

Another group has sprung up to mock this society.

I have had a few occasions where people mocked me for believing in the Bible, claiming the Bible supports the flat earth theory. Not surprisingly, when I ask them, “Where does it say that?” they have had no answer.

The Bible described the shape of the earth centuries, 300 years, before Aristotle proposed that the earth was spherical (round). “It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth,” … Isaiah 40:22 (see also Proverbs 8:27).

The word interpreted “circle” here is the Hebrew word chuwg which is also translated “circuit,” or “compass” (depending on the context). It suggests something arched, rounded, or spherical – not something that is flat.

Also consider, “As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.” Psalm 103:12. One can go west or east forever, unlike north and south … this can only happen on a sphere.

Over 2000 years after Isaiah, in 1475, Copernicus discovered that the earth was round and hung in space. (Job 26:7) Once again, man discovered what God had inspired thousands of years before.

Thinking Out Of The Box

I was writing this on an airplane heading out to do a seminar in Hastings Nebraska. The United Hemispheres magazine supplied in the seat pocket had an interesting article in their “2012 Green Issue.” First of all, I believe that God is the Master Creator, the original “out-of-the-box” Thinker. Since mankind was created in His image, I think that He has also given us the ability to use our created brains to think “out-of-the-box.”

Here is a synopsis of some of the “out-of-the-box” ideas mentioned in the article that are actually being implemented.

  • Embed sidewalks with the proper type of receptor that picks up the force of a pedestrian’s footsteps to generate electricity to power the streetlights.
  • Instead of putting solar panels on a home over the roofing material, use solar shingles to weatherproof the home AND to also generate electricity. (This is actually being used in Colorado now.)
  • Paint the walls of an indoor sunny area with a special paint on top of a conducting surface to use sunlight energy to run kitchen appliances.
  • A company in Holland is making sidewalk surfaces with special high yield solar panels to produce huge amounts of solar electricity. The SolaRoad concept will be extended to highways.
  • I’m not so sure I like this one as I will still be asking, “Where’s the beef,” but an industry is using stem cells, to produce an artificially grown beef hamburger WITHOUT the cow. One minor glitch is that you won’t see it in any fast food joints for quite some time as it costs about $345,000 to produce that hamburger.
  • Are you a concrete jungle dweller whose eyes are sore from searching for greenery? The VERTICAL forest concept (which is actually being built in Milan) is to produce high-rise apartment tower complexes combined with a forest. Each unit will have balconies that would support several trees/bushes. The vertical forest would not only provide aesthetics for the inhabitants, but would also produce more oxygen as the plants cycle excess carbon dioxide, and filter the air.I do see some issues with this concept that I hope were figured out. (Branches falling in the wind, pollen, root damage. I can also hope that parents don’t encourage their children to climb the trees as even falling out of the lower branches from 30 stories up would be deadly.

As a creationist, I am glad that people are using their God-given creativity to make this world and its cities a better place to live (well, hopefully!). For more information and other ideas, pick up the April 2012 United Hemispheres publication. (The image is from http://io9.com/5896162/these-vertical-forests-will-soon-dominate-milans-skyline)

“My Church Beat Me Up”

“You forgot to talk about ‘panspermia’ when you talked about the options about where we come from,” challenged a teenager after a Creation Science Fellowship meeting in New Mexico.

I explained to him that panspermia was just a variation on evolution … because there is no true evidence for life beginning by itself here upon the earth, panspermia was proposed as a theory that life on earth originated from organisms coming from outer space.

He then shared that he enjoyed my presentation on “The Miracle of Life,” and it had given him some things to think about. He went on to admit that he was really struggling in what to believe about evolution or Creation.

My next question to him was, “Do you believe in Jesus Christ?”After a long pause he stated, “I used to, but now … no I don’t believe in Jesus.”  “What do you mean, ‘you used to’?”, I asked?

“The church I go to has really beaten me up. They keep teaching that the church is the authority and not the Bible. I don’t know who to trust. I am really confused.” I asked him what church he attended, and by his answer, I then knew why he was so confused. Not only does this church teach it is authority, but it also teaches that evolution is true.

Unfortunately, all of us at AOI have met many youth struggling with the same issues. Tragically, it is not just the outside worldview they are in a battle with, but many times that battle rages on within the church.

My advice and challenge to that young man … don’t put your trust in a religion; rather put it in the Word of God – into a personal relationship with the Savior Jesus Christ. Start reading and studying the Bible and go to a Bible believing church. Recognize all the artwork that is rampant in the books, movies, magazines, and museums is just that – ARTWORK! Then with an open mind begin asking, “What’s the Evidence?” Hopefully he will then be led to the Truth of Jesus Christ our Creator (Col. 1:16)

The Birth of the Genesis Project

The idea for the Genesis Project started years ago in Africa.  It all began when Lanny and I traveled to Africa a few months after 9/11 to teach about creation and the new age movement.  It was during the last few days of our one month tour and we were finishing up in Johannesburg, South Africa.

It was Saturday night and we were approached by an elder from the church where we were teaching the next morning.  He informed us that his pastor did not want us to teach, but to preach.  Preach only from the Bible, and leave our creation slides at the motel, he said.  We informed the elder we are not preachers, but teachers.  He was not impressed.  The order was to preach from the Bible or stay home.

After the elder left, we contemplated what we should do.  Lanny had the bright idea to preach what we teach.  We taught creation, and where do you find creation?  That’s right, it is taught in Genesis!  Lanny said he would preach on Genesis chapter one and two and for me to preach on chapter three.  That was our plan.  After the preaching on Genesis, a lady was saved!  The pastor was surprised.  Never before had anybody trusted Jesus Christ by the preaching of Genesis!

Then in 2008, I was invited to come to India and teach creation.  The first year I taught primarily the scientific evidence for creation.  The second year, I discovered my teaching was ‘going over the heads’ of most of my students.  They did not understand some of the scientific information.  Most of them were taught evolution, and many believed in some form of evolution. There had to be a better way to teach these scientific concepts.

I realized that most, if not all, the students had Bibles.  So again, I turned to Genesis.  This they could understand.  All I did was add the scientific information as I taught through the book of Genesis.  Because what we observe today is what the Bible has been telling us for thousands of years. They understood!  They were overjoyed to discover that Genesis and creation were true!  Because of the hunger to know the truth, we at AOI are now in the process of putting the Genesis Series  down in writing as well as on DVD’s.  So stay tuned for further developments.
