Does the Bible Teach a Flat Earth?

Today most all Creation scientists and secular scientists believe the earth is a sphere. However, the belief that the earth is flat has been believed by many ancient “pre-scientific” cultures (Greece, India, China, and aboriginal cultures of the Americas). As a side note, it has been shown that European’s belief in a flat earth during the time of Columbus is a myth. In 330 BC, Aristotle suggested that the earth might be a sphere. See the wikipedia article.

Interestingly, since 1956 there is an International Flat Earth Society that continues to further the belief that the earth is flat.

Another group has sprung up to mock this society.

I have had a few occasions where people mocked me for believing in the Bible, claiming the Bible supports the flat earth theory. Not surprisingly, when I ask them, “Where does it say that?” they have had no answer.

The Bible described the shape of the earth centuries, 300 years, before Aristotle proposed that the earth was spherical (round). “It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth,” … Isaiah 40:22 (see also Proverbs 8:27).

The word interpreted “circle” here is the Hebrew word chuwg which is also translated “circuit,” or “compass” (depending on the context). It suggests something arched, rounded, or spherical – not something that is flat.

Also consider, “As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.” Psalm 103:12. One can go west or east forever, unlike north and south … this can only happen on a sphere.

Over 2000 years after Isaiah, in 1475, Copernicus discovered that the earth was round and hung in space. (Job 26:7) Once again, man discovered what God had inspired thousands of years before.
