Back on the Farm

Sometimes as we travel and “minister” to others with the creation message, we end up being the ones “ministered” to as well.  That happened to our family recently while we were in eastern Colorado. We did not have our travel trailer with us on this trip so we stayed in homes.  We were very blessed by one couple that provided for our needs for four nights.

It was a country home and it was calving season.  I found myself reliving old memories of life on the farm, as I was able to assist with feeding the animals, witnessing the birth of a new calf, and even carrying them to the shed for protection from the weather.  It was a great diversion from the speaking, studying, and writing that are so much a part of my life now.

I enjoy my work very much, but it was so good to have a taste of that great farm life again.  We were also very blessed by this couple’s outpouring of kindness to us in spite of some great physical challenges themselves.  We just say, “Thank you, Lord, for the body of Christ, who bless us in countless ways on our journey.  They also testify of Your greatness and grace to us daily.”

Make sure you check in next week, as I will answer poor Dave on his attempt for more days in the week.  It is something that the French tried in the wake of the French Revolution.

Savings from Daylight Savings???

Every year I have great hopes in my brain about having some “time savings” whenever Daylight Savings time rolls around. But alas, where is it?! It must have passed me up! I certainly could use some right now as I am trying desperately to accomplish everything I “think” I need to accomplish between now and this weekend’s seminar, which incidentally, is followed up the next morning by the start of a 2 week field trip with 31 Bible college students.

Mary Jo keeps telling me, “Sorry, there are only so many hours in the day!”

Ohhhh, isn’t that consumer fraud that is making me think I will have more time? Not only would it be very nice to have extra hours during the day, but a few extra days at the end of the week would also be REALLY nice!

However, I guess that wouldn’t really work either since “there are only so many days in the week,” and years certainly can’t be stretched either! So I guess I’ll have to come up with a better solution! In the meantime, time keeps ticking away!

Make sure you stay tuned to our Blog as Richard Stepanek will be writing very soon about what happened when some countries tried to change the length of the week. That should be interesting!

Diamond Fields

I was recently doing some research on additional sites to explore for the upcoming Jackson Hole Bible College field trip and noted a location on the map labeled Diamond Fields. It is located 23 miles NE of Kayenta, Arizona.

“Hey,” I thought, “What a great place to take a group of usually broke Bible college students! I am sure they would enjoy picking up a few diamonds!”  I had never before heard of diamonds in the area, but being a geologist, I knew there was a chance since there were volcanic formations in the vicinity which can be a source of diamonds from deep within the earth.

But alas, after research, I discovered that the diamonds at Diamond Field were non-existent. Instead, I found some interesting gems of history. It was the Great Diamond Hoax that gave the location its name. In 1872, scoundrels by the names of Phillip Arnold and John Slack brought a bag of industrial grade diamonds, rubies, and other gemstones into a bank in San Francisco. They were looking for investors to help them set up a mining operation for valuable gemstones.

Of course, the investors wanted to see the location of the site, so, the crooks led one of them (blindfolded) to a location in Southern Colorado where they had “salted” the mine. Their plot worked until a geologist later found the “salted” site and exposed the scam. However, Arnold and Slack slipped out of town with $155,000.

Even though that site was fraudulent, treasure seekers scoured the region in search for Arnold’s and Slack’s deposit. The most converged on site was in northern Arizona which became known as Diamond Fields even though no diamonds were ever found there.

Multiplication of Ministry

His Productions

Over the years, AOI has had a chance to “train up” many individual with the foundations of Creation. Many of those individuals have used this knowledge to minister in their local churches and areas.

Some 18 years ago, when Marilyn, my daughters, and I first began with AOI, we met a family at one of our Creation Family Camps, and later at the church they were attending in Texas. They had a real desire to learn the puppet ministry, so they came to another of AOI’s family camps. While there, they not only received a lot of creation training, but we were able to work with them on an individual basis and teach them basic puppetry.

It has been such a blessing to see how their puppet ministry has grown over the years. They began as a family ministry, but expanded into a youth puppet ministry. Over the years they have worked with many youth, teaching them puppetry and presenting well done puppet shows at different venues all over the United States. Another part of their ministry is to disciple those youth.

If you are interested in having this team minister to your group, especially in the Texas area, contact them through their website.

Presently here at AOI, we are all prayerfully seeking God’s wisdom for our future … not our retirement, but the continuance of the ministry of AOI when we physically cannot keep on traveling around the country. Won’t you join us in prayer as we look for new venues and opportunities to continue sharing the Creation Message.

Dinosaur Teeth and Mark Twain

Years ago, Mark Twain in his very tongue in cheek method wrote in Life on the Mississippi,

“There is something fascinating about science. One gets such wholesale returns of conjecture out of such a trifling investment of fact.”

I have just read an article which seems to support Twain’s thesis (rightly or wrongly).

Scientists have been looking at the teeth of dinosaurs to determine their body temperature. As they point out, you can’t just stick a thermometer in their cold, dead, fleshless mouths, but they think they can tell the body temperature by the type of minerals left on their teeth. Perhaps this is valid. If so, their body temperatures were not much different than ours.

Although there are those who advance the warm-blooded nature of Dinosaurs, does this evidence prove they were warm blooded? Possibly, but the article did point out that is one interpretation. They also mentioned that animals the size of many dinosaurs could be warmer simply because of the sheer size. Perhaps, too, it was just a warmer climate back when they lived. (By the way, that fits with the Flood model! Temperatures prior to the Flood could have been warmer throughout the world. Would that contribute to the observations?)

The returns one gets from the “investment of fact” would, of course, depend on what thesis you are trying to support. The evolutionary glasses will certainly help you see things that the evidence may not necessarily suggest, and at the same time, will screen out other information which might give a different interpretation. We see that regularly when we present problems with evolution in our seminars. We sometimes hear, “Oh, wow! I never thought of that.”  That is to be expected since students usually only hear evolutionary interpretations of the evidence and never get to hear a creationist view.

We at AOI hope you will get into the teeth of the matter and spread the word of Creation! Help others chew on the facts.

Questions, Questions, Questions

Our first talk for the Texas tour we are now on, was with a high school youth group. The event had been advertised as a short talk followed by a question and answer period.

The young youth pastor of this church works with a group called “Young Life.”  Throughout the week, he works with students at various high schools in the San Antonio area. He invites these students to his youth group to study and learn more about the Bible. Some of these students are believers, some non-believers, and others are”don’t know what to” believers.

The youth pastor shared with us that students are constantly asking him questions that relate to Creation …he admitted that he had no answer for many of these questions, so he felt our coming to the area was a perfect opportunity to get some answers. He had the students prepare by making lists with questions they had about Creation.

First, I did a 45 minute presentation on the Icons of Evolution. This is a talk on the so-called proofs of evolution that have been refuted long ago. I am continually amazed at how many hands will be raised when I ask students if they still see these “icons” in their text books today.

After the talk, we began a time of question and answers. Immediately, I was bombarded (respectfully I might add) with questions: What about the Big Bang? What about dinosaurs? What about mutations? What about pain and suffering? Hasn’t evolution been proven true? What about fossils? And the questions went on and on … for over an hour and a half with the main group, then another 30 minutes with 4 or 5 individuals.

I quickly came to realize that not only did the students have questions of their own, but the Christians were asking questions that their friends are asking them. I was blessed to have the opportunity to work with these students and point them to our resources for even more answers (our web site, newsletters, books, DVDs, etc.). At the same time, my heart is grieved by the spiritual warfare our children are going through. The evolutionary worldview is constantly beating them up, and they need so much to hear and get answers to the Truth.

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? Ro 10:14

Don’t be taken Captive…..Stand Firm!

Mary Jo & I were just doing a seminar in a tiny town in eastern Colorado.  For such a small community, it was great to see about 200 people show up. That shows the strength of small farming communities like this one.

However, even in this “conservative” community, I was approached by a woman who told me that her daughter gave up her faith, and ended up becoming an atheist during her high school years. The reason?  “Evolution!”

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case (even in that community). We hear this way too often. Some say that they wished we had come 5 years earlier with our message. The point is that evolution is destroying the faith of young people who are growing up in the church. It is also a major stumbling block to young people accepting the Gospel.

That is why we keep doing what we do. It is also why we are planning new ways to impact thousands of more kids with the Truth. (More on that later!)

I encourage you to ask your young people how they are doing in their faith and how they are handling the evolution issue. Also, supply them with materials which show the fallacies of evolution. Perhaps get our DVD set or one of the books in our store such as the Answers Book both of which gives answers for the most asked questions regarding evolution.

Colossians 2:8 clearly warns us not to be taken captive by philosophy and empty deceit. Evolution is certainly one of those philosophies. But the big issue with students is that it is being presented as if it were science.

Hang on to the Truth!

A New Children’s Venue … Spring Break VBS

Spring break is always a challenge when it comes to booking teaching engagements. As we were trying to schedule the Texas trip we were on, pastors were reluctant to schedule a Creation seminar. With public school students having a week off, many families take the opportunity to go on a short family vacation, therefore church attendance is down.

Yet many school children, whose families don’t go on vacation, have nothing to do for that week of spring break. We were able to do a little brain-storming with a pastor in San Antonio, Texas, and came up with an experiment he allowed us to try … a mini-vacation Bible school.

We scheduled a three hour program on a Monday morning, teaching about Dinosaurs and the Bible. Because the church doesn’t have a lot of children, they only expected 15 to 20 children to attend. We were very pleased when over 40 kids and adults showed up! In the future we are going to begin recommending a Vacation Bible School, in the midst of spring break.

If your church or group would be interested in this type of program in the future, contact us at lannyjohnson@discovercreation.org or call our office at 970-523-9943.

How Dare You Contradict Evolution?

David Coppedge

As I write, David Coppedge is in the midst of a courtroom battle regarding a discrimination lawsuit he has brought against his former employer, Jet Propulsion Labs. He had been employed at the lab for quite a few years and was an information technology specialist and system administrator on JPL’s international Cassini mission to Saturn. He was fired by the lab for supposed religious harassment after he filed suit to protect his free expression rights.

What was the nature of the harassment that the tax-funded JPL took issue with? According to David, his colleague had expressed interest in his viewpoints, so David loaned her some of his DVD’s on intelligent design.

Expressing an intelligent design opinion is not exactly what I would think harassment would look like. This is especially true in the context of the project he was involved in. The NASA probe was looking for evidences in our solar system for an evolutionary origin of life.  Apparently for those committed to evolution, however, anything questioning evolution is construed as religious harassment since it must be challenging their religious beliefs.

Keep in mind, the coworker did not have to ask David’s opinion on the subject of intelligent design, and she did not have to take the DVD’s that she expressed a desire to view, since they were not forcefully placed in her hand.

I am certainly praying about the outcome of this case as it has a lot to do with the issue of free speech. I will keep you posted.

Conferences and ‘Cowboy Communities’

It is always encouraging to be invited back to annual teaching events. Cornerstone Bible Institute, in Hot Springs, SD, had its annual Bible conference Feb. 20th through the 24th.  I had a great week of teaching, answering questions, and just spending time in fellowship with faculty and students.  It was a unique situation, in that I had about 20 hours of total instruction time.

It provided the opportunity to cover the creation/evolution issue extensively and also present my series on the early chapters of Genesis.  I was able to cover chapters 1-3 during the evening sessions.  There were times of refreshment at both the morning sessions and after the evening ones, in which further discussions and growth took place.

The conference was very well attended.  Many residents from the area, along with local churches were mingled with the Cornerstone students and faculty.  There were also a number of families with students, not from Cornerstone, who came for the week or a part of it.

On that same trip, we spent two Sundays teaching at Oshoto Community Bible Church in Oshoto, WY.  It is a very rural church in Northeast Wyoming.  It was a joy to serve them as they are currently without a pastor.  They have many families with young children, so it was good to see them being grounded in God’s Word.  Many traveled from a great distance to attend.  It was great to minister to this ‘cowboy community!’

Whether it be conferences at colleges or institutes, or helping with services in those out of the way places, we praise God for the opportunity to teach and edify the body of Christ.  Thanks for helping us do what we do.
