What happened to Truth?

The Truth Please!

I received this note some time ago from a geology student at a university in Colorado. We have worked with this student to help her differentiate between fact or fiction. Since that time, she has done a wonderful job. I have left off names as she is still a student and needs to graduate.

She wrote: “This is no joke. This is a quote from my [petrology, geology] professor:”

“We don’t know what happened.  Just make something up.  Get it published.  People will quote you.  It will stand for 50 years before someone will test it and find out it isn’t true.”

Can you imagine what would happen if a Creationist said that?  However, from experience, this kind of sounds like some of the techniques some professors use who throw out information at our seminars at the universities. The intent is usually to try to make the students question the reliability of the presentation we have just given.  It is also very similar to one debate we were in against 3 evolutionists. One of the evolutionists was overheard saying, “It doesn’t matter what we say in this debate. All we have to do is to get them [the students] on our side. Remember we have all the rest of the year to work with these students.”

Argghhhh….What about truth? To me, it is disappointing that this professor, and some of those we have experienced, have this kind of attitude!

An AOI Colorado National Monument Tour

I recently took a small group of high school students and teachers on a tour of the Colorado National Monument. On this tour, we stop at a very scenic overlook where we can view the Grand Valley, the Book Cliffs, Mt. Garfield, Monument Canyon, and many of the geologic formations in the National Monument.

On this tour, I (and other AOI speakers) give two different worldviews regarding the formation of the Uncompahgre Plateau, and in particular, the Colorado National Monument area.

One worldview presented is that of secular, evolutionary geology, dealing with 1.7 billion years of geological processes to form the features seen at the Monument.

The other worldview presented is that of Creation, based on the Biblical flood occurring about 4500 years ago.

The features observed in this area can be explained with flood geology (catastrophic processes) much better than using the slow and gradual processes of secular geology.

If you are ever in the Grand Junction area, and would like a Colorado National Monument tour, call the AOI office (970-523-9943) to arrange. Availability of tours depends on the presence of AOI speakers in town at the time. The AOI portion of the tour is free … we only ask that you might consider a love offering to help cover our expenses (mileage and entry fees). You would be responsible for the Monument entry fees ($10.00 per vehicle at this writing). You can call the Colorado National Monument (970-858-3617) for their current pricing.

Intellectualism

I just received an email from a visitor to our website. She says:

“Your website states:

‘A high percentage of youth from evangelical homes and churches reject their faith or are seriously weakened because of evolutionary indoctrination and other anti-God philosophies taught throughout our society.’

You have it wrong—these youth leave because they join an intellectually challenging world and realize your cult has brainwashed them.”

I have to shake my head when I hear this kind of comment. I wonder if the youth have joined an intellectually challenging world or one that is intellectually challenged. Is it intellectual to believe everything in the universe came for absolutely nothing or that the first cell happened by accident against overwhelming odds (1 chance in 1 followed by 40,000 zeros), or that the human eye and brain just popped into existence?

We may try to be “intellectual” by concocting non-God schemes, but to me, it just doesn’t satisfy true intellectualism or even credulity. So who is brainwashed?

Impossible?

Last week I was invited by Master Plan Ministries to speak to their TNL (Tuesday Night Live) group at Colorado Mesa University (formerly Mesa State College). This group of about 70 students  (mostly Christian), meet every Tuesday night on campus for a time of praise and worship followed by a presentation by either one of the students, staff, or by a guest speaker. After the meeting, many of the students then get together for a time of discussion and fellowship.

I have had the privilege to speak to this group on four different occasions, and participate in a weekend retreat with them. Last week I shared my talk “Does It Matter.” In this topic, I share how many people have tried to compromise the ideas of evolution with the Bible.   However, scripture shows that the two ideas are incompatible. Does our worldview matter? I present some of the atrocities of the past based on evolutionary thought and show that ideas do have consequences. I also show that the first chapters of Genesis are the very foundation and an integral part of the rest of the biblical record. If the foundation is undermined, it will not be long until the superstructure built upon it collapses as well.

After the presentation, I spent about an hour with a few of the students answering their questions. One of the students wanted to know more about how dinosaurs fit with the Bible.

Another student asked a lot of questions, mostly on the age of the earth. Time and time again he used the word ‘impossible’ when it came to subjects of the Bible. A lot of it was impossible for him to believe because “science has proven.” On each subject I was able to refute that so-called-impossibility with ‘science.’

So did the time spent with these students make a difference? I really don’t know, but I do know that it promoted a lot of discussion among the students that night and the following evening in various Bible study groups. One of the staff of Master Plan Ministries shared with me that the ‘impossible’ young man told him later, “He answered all of my questions.” He was now going to ask his professors the same questions he had asked of me. I am pretty sure I know the viewpoints the professors will give him.  I prayerfully hope that he will someday believe the Bible for what it says, and not rely on the words of man.

Master Plan Ministries goal is “preparing others to reach and influence the world for Christ through spiritual multiplication.” They have ministries on 2 campuses on the western slope of Colorado. If you know of students attending Fort Lewis State College in Durango have them go to eternityimpact.com for more information. For students attending Colorado Mesa University, go to the mytnl website. These ministries will help the students meet their spiritual needs.

11th Commandment – Eat Pizza?

After a fairly intense week of speaking in the inner city of Chicago, the family I had been staying with treated their family and me to pizza at Giordano’s Pizza, which is not too far from their home. The food was great but what I found amusing was some of the signs they had up on the walls.

You have all heard of the 10 commandments, but one sign said that the 11th commandment was to eat pizza.

Another sign referred to God’s 6 day creation, but it differed from the Biblical text somewhat when the sign said that on the 7th day He ordered pizza. Even though it’s a bit off on the Biblical text theologically, it was a fun place to go and it did bring the proper scripture to remembrance.

It was also good to let down a bit at the end of the busy week, have some fun and enjoy good pizza and good company with this family at a very Chicago style pizza place. Afterwards, we went back to their home and had a great time as the family practiced their music for their church the next day.  I guess those are some of the perks of this ministry! For that I am quite thankful!

Gunslingers?

Remember those famous movies of the old west? The main villain and his gang have been terrorizing the town. Nobody stands up to them out of fear. Then along comes the guy in the (frequently) white cowboy hat, who either singlehandedly cleans up the whole mess or motivates the town’s people to collectively stand with him.

Creation ministry on the college campus is kind of like that. A huge difference is that we don’t come in with our white cowboy hat, we aren’t riding on a white horse, and we really can’t clean up the whole mess!  Sometimes, it seems a good share of the audience is in the villain’s camp and we feel like trying to call in the Texas Rangers.

Frequently, though, it boils down to a few of the chief atheist “gunslingers” trying  to “gun” us down with their arguments about some picky detail that might appear to support evolution (that is, if they pull their hat down far enough over their eyes).

Although the “close-minded gang” may not be swayed, a seed is planted! Also, the Christian students on the campus are like the town’s people who are relieved to have someone come alongside of them. The important thing for you to remember is that we at AOI need you, our readers, to help us do that. So, if at all possible, please make AOI one of your special giving options and pray that many others will do the same.

Have a great Thanksgiving!

What Religion is Best?

“What religion is better than the other religions?” This question was posed to me after I had just spoken to a small group of college wrestlers about creation last week.  The student’s question was a great question.

My answer centered around the idea that all the religions are basically about man trying to work his/her way to heaven and god. Christianity is different and much superior to the others. It is about God reaching out to man.

I then gave the bridge illustration. Basically, we stand on one side of a huge gulf of sin and unrighteousness that separates us from the holiness of God.  So how do we make it to God? No matter what we try on our own, we can’t do it. The only way over to God is if God builds the bridge.

That is exactly what He did. The bridge is Jesus Christ. By acknowledging Him for who He really is, confessing that we have really blown it in our lives, asking Him to cleanse us, and then inviting Him to rule over our lives, we can have fellowship with the living God.

I then told them that all the other religions are trying to build their own bridge. In Christianity, God builds the bridge for us.

I am happy to say that I am confident that the Christian coach who had invited me to speak will follow through to help this student and the others who heard the message walk across that bridge.

For a complete explanation of the bridge illustration that the Navigators use and from where the illustration above is from, please see ‘The Bridge to Life‘ on their website.

Making a Difference?

At the end of a long year of travel, teaching, writing, and all the other things involved in the ministry of AOI, I sometimes come to the point of asking, “Are we having an impact with our teachings?”

Now, why I would even ask this question of God shows that I am only human … we saw so many children impacted this summer, with many putting their faith and trust in Jesus for the first time, and lots of young adults sharing with us how the Creation message had changed their lives.

Yet, in my humanity, it seems that I still need an occasional boost of encouragement  to keep me focused … and our gracious God provided that encouragement at our last seminar.

After a talk about theistic evolution and how the Bible and evolution are incompatible, a lady shared with me, “I love the Lord Jesus, yet I am in a different camp than you when it comes to evolution. I have to admit though … you have given me a lot of things to think about and mull over.”

At the end of that same seminar, where I had also shared about dinosaurs and the Bible, the Flood, the origin of man, and the age of the earth, a man stated, “I have always had a lot of bits and pieces of knowledge floating around in my brain, but I have never been able to bring all the pieces of Creation together. I just want to thank you, because of what you have taught over the last few days, I can now connect the dots.”

Thank You Lord … your message of Creation is making a difference! Thanks for the reminder. Your Word truly is powerful stuff!

Inner City Chicago

“These high school students are tough inner city kids. You just don’t know how they will respond.” It was a good warning that I received before speaking at a school in the inner city of Chicago the last few days. Many of the guys were much bigger than me, but fortunately, they responded well to the Creation vs. Evolution message I brought.

The first day, I spoke to various classes at this school on Blind Chance or Intelligent Design for 5 periods and then gave a session on geology and the Flood during another period. I am really glad my voice held out! (This was important as I was also needing a voice for a few hours that evening with some additional individuals in an informal setting).

The next day, was an all school gathering at a school where I had previously spoken about the battle for the mind coupled with asking the right questions when presented with “proofs” of evolution. The administration and I were glad that a large number of the high school students were really enthusiastic about the presentation.

We frequently hear that a group of students won’t sit still long enough for a program.  In some cases, we are told that the kids are too young and can’t sit for more than 20 minutes. All the speakers at AOI find that is not the case. Of course it helps that we use a huge number of high quality illustrations and pray a lot, too! However, I think hunger is the key! The students appear to be hungry for the truth and soak it up! Keep praying for open, hungry-for-the-truth minds!

Another Appointed Meeting!

Recently, I was sitting on an airplane waiting for takeoff.  A woman came in at the last minute. She was just allowed the empty seat as a standby passenger. When she sat down I heard her say, “Thank Jesus I got a seat.” I told her she certainly was thanking the right person! That opened up some conversation.

As the flight progressed, she found out that I was on a speaking trip to teach creation.  Then she said she had been talking to her grandson who used to attend a church. She said her grandson was telling her about what he had learned in school – especially evolution. She had told her grandson that she believes the Bible and it says that God created everything, it didn’t evolve.  His response was, “Oh, Grandma, how can I believe the Bible when evolution is a fact?” After learning evolution, he totally dismissed the Bible and what his church taught.

I gave her my card with our website. She plans to give that to her grandson. Hopefully, he will go there and find out why evolution just doesn’t work and that there is strong evidence for creation.

Her final words to me were, “I hope your presentations go really well, the young people need to hear that.”

Yes, for sure — young people certainly need to hear this message. Unfortunately, the conversation she had with her grandson is certainly one that is happening across this country. False “proofs” of evolution are being taught, which are shaking the faith of way to many youth and adults both here and abroad. That is why we continue to travel and speak across the country! People need to hear!
