Anyone watching the film Expelled will know that there is a philosophical bias against people who hold Non-Darwinian views, or who even question evolution. Some have been dismissed from jobs, denied tenure, or not given advancement due to their views. I have seen this myself. What is encouraging is that this year there are at least three cases that I know of where the discrimination backfired.
One Headline read, “ University Of Kentucky Settles Suit With Astronomer Martin Gaskell .” Gaskell, an astronomy professor, sued the University of Kentucky claiming he lost out on a top job because of his Christian beliefs. The settlement paid Gaskell $125,000.
Articles found at http://www.uncommondescent.com shows another case of failed discrimination. Applied Mathematics Letters paid $10,000 and gave sincere and heart-felt apology to avoid litigation after it withdrew mathematician Granville Sewell’s previously accepted and peer-reviewed paper which critiqued neo-Darwinism.
According to Nota Bena (August 31, 2011), “The state-run California Science Center (CSC) has paid $110,000 to settle a lawsuit by American Freedom Alliance (AFA) against CSC for violating AFA’s First Amendment free speech rights to advocate intelligent design (ID). As part of the settlement, the CSC also has invited AFA to present the ID event it previously cancelled.”
“This is an historic victory for the ID movement,” said Casey Luskin, an attorney and policy analyst with Discovery Institute’s Center for Science & Culture. “The First Amendment forbids government preference for one viewpoint over another, yet evidence disclosed in this case shows the CSC, Smithsonian Institution, and LA County Museum of Natural History attempted to stifle dissent from Darwinism. The result was illegal state-sponsored suppression of protected speech.”
There are many other instances of this kind of discrimination. Over the years, we have been in contact with many such people. It certainly has been the mode-of operation with many pro-Darwin people to silence the voices of those who oppose or even question evolution. They seemed to have free-reign to do so in the past, but hopefully free thought rather than suppression will once again be part of academia.
