Quotes and Skeptics

A friend of mine, located where we do a lot of ministry to college students, sent me the following  quote with a word that everyone should check for accuracy of quotations:

“The trouble with finding quotes on the internet is that you can’t trust their accuracy.”

– – Thomas Jefferson

Of course, any good researcher must check out the validity of the quote (which I do). That is why I just smile when some of the quotes I use in my lectures are questioned by skeptics. The usual charge is, “Oh, ____ wouldn’t say that!” The truth is they did. I encourage the skeptic to check it out.

Another charge is that I am “quote mining.” This means I glean the quotes when they are valuable for my presentations. As a matter of fact, I think that most people who quote someone will use the quote to illustrate a point. But if a creationist like me does it and makes evolutionary assumptions seem ridiculous with it, skeptics say that I am “mining the quote” and making the audience think that the person I am quoting is supporting my view.

However, I will never try to make an evolutionist look like a non-evolutionist. I am quick to point out times that (for an example) “here is an evolutionist who is saying that the fossils don’t support evolution.” I am not saying that he gave up evolution, but just that he sees the same thing I do even though he doesn’t “get it.” He doesn’t get the big picture.

Right along with that charge is the claim, “You’re taking him out of context.” My answer is, “No, I’m not. Look it up for yourself!” Again the claim is similar to above– making the one I’m quoting look like he doubts evolution when in fact the normal context is that he is still an ardent evolution believer. This will almost always be the case.

Most evolutionists I quote are locked into their evolutionary/naturalistic worldview which demands evolution to be accepted. However, this is frequently contrary to what the actual evidence indicates. That part I enjoy pointing out, and even smile when I do! Hopefully some of these students will finally “get it!” Evolution is bankrupt!

Declaration of Dependence

Whereas: God is the Creator and Supreme Ruler of the Universe, Who existed before all things and in Him all things consist (Genesis 1:1; Colossians 1:17); and I was created by His will and for His glory (Revelation 4:11); but,

Whereas: I have inherited a sin nature from my forefather, Adam, (Romans 5; I Corinthians 15), and I myself have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), I therefore deserve death (Romans 6:23); but,

Whereas: When I was yet a sinner, God loved me so much that He gave His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for me, redeem me, and give me the gift of Eternal Life by His grace (John 3:16; Romans 5:8; Ephesians 2:8,9); and,

Whereas: He has given me His precious Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, to be my Comforter, Teacher, Guide, and Seal of my Redemption (John 14-16);

Therefore, Be It Resolved That: I hereby declare my complete Dependence upon my Creator, and confess my total inability to save myself. I acknowledge my sins and purpose by His grace to turn from them.

I gratefully trust my God for the gift of Eternal Life in His Son, Jesus Christ, Whom I also acknowledge and submit to as Lord. I  yield to the work of His Spirit in my life and commit my life, in time and in eternity, into His loving Hands.

Flood Triggered Ice Age?

U-Shaped Valleys near Kebler Pass

I recently traveled over Kebler Pass for the first time. Kebler Pass is a high mountain pass (el. 10,007 ft.) between Somerset and Crested Butte, Colorado. The maintained gravel road (accessible by all passenger vehicles in the summer – closed in the winter) meanders through beautiful mountain peaks, valleys, and majestic Quaking Aspen forests. This is a mountain pass I will certainly try to return to in the fall, when the aspen are in full autumn splendor!

Several of the mountain peaks exhibit textbook examples of U-shaped valleys caused by glacial erosion. In my training as a secular geologist, I was taught these glaciers were the result of multiple recurring ice ages spanning millions of years. Now, as a young earth creationist, how can I explain an ice age? Michael Oard has proposed an ice age model caused by the Flood, which I believe is a valid explanation.

At the beginning of the Flood (about 4,400 years ago) the fountains of the great deep broke open (Genesis 7:11).  Along with hot water pouring out of the earth, there were erupting volcanoes, dumping hot lava into the waters during and after the Flood, resulting in warm oceans. These volcanoes also threw lots of ash, dirt and dust into the air, reflecting some of the sunlight back to space causing cooler summers.

The resulting warm oceans would evaporate lots of warm water vapor into the atmosphere, mixing with the cooler air over the land, producing tremendous amounts of moisture. At the poles and higher elevations, large quantities of snow would have accumulated. The cool summers would keep the snow from melting, allowing huge ice sheets to develop.

Using principles of atmospheric science, Oard has estimated that ice sheets thousands of feet thick (2,300 feet [700 m] in the Northern Hemisphere and 4,000 feet [1,220 m] on Antarctica) could have accumulated in less than 500 years. At the conclusion of the 500 years, the conditions for the Ice Age would have ended and would then be followed by 200 years of melting.

I have only given a much shortened sample of Michael Oard’s proposal. You can learn more from his book, “Frozen in Time“, available at our store.

Economic Crunch

The View at Camp IdRaHaJe

This last week we were to teach at the 3rd camp at IdRaHaJe, working with High school age campers. Unfortunately, one of the groups that normally bring youth in from Utah had to cancel because of economics … fuel prices are just too high. Just before we headed out the door to return up to the camp, after a short 2 days home between camps, the director called with the news that they had to cancel the High school camp for financial reasons.

Since we had to return to the camp to pick up our travel trailer,  I offered to share some more teaching with the counselors and staff. They took me up on the idea, so we spent several more days there relaxing with our two grandsons during the day, and teaching in the evenings.

We have seen the downturned economy affecting many ministries, small and large alike. We have also felt the crunch here at AOI. Many of our donors are struggling, and as a result have had to cut back or discontinue donations. We just have to pray and have faith that God will raise up more supporters, so that we may continue sharing this vital message of God’s Creation.
