A Visit To The Chicago Field Museum

Visiting the Chicago Field Museum was an interesting experience.  It was a busy area with many school groups taking tours. Our very first exposure was to the exhibit entitled, “The Evolving Planet.”

It was heartbreaking to hear the guides explaining to the children how the atmosphere was so toxic in the beginning that no life could possibly exist.   It made me realize again just what a battle we are in, and how sad it is.   These young innocent lives were being indoctrinated at such an early age, with lies that try to explain away our Creator.  As the guide further explained how toxic these gasses were, I couldn’t help but think of Genesis telling us what God thought about His creation, ”It was very good!”

Dog Variations

We did have an enjoyable time at the Chicago Field Museum.  Even though they promoted the evolutionary philosophy, they had some wonderful evidence for creation and the created kinds or families.

In the exhibits of the World of Mammals, World of Birds, etc., they had great displays of the variety of God’s created kinds or families.  For example, they had the cat family, the dog family, owl family, etc.  I believe without realizing it, the museum demonstrated God’s creative power in the complexity and diversity of each kind.

The variety of each kind came from God’s mandate to be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth.  Natural selection would help each kind to adapt to different environments by eliminating genes which are not beneficial in certain environments.   Arctic foxes, in the dog family, adapted to the cool climates, while other dogs adapted to warmer climates.  Thus fulfilling God’s mandate to be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the earth.

Tiktaalik Variation of a Lobe Fin Fish

While looking at the so called “missing links,” we observed variations of fish, amphibians, reptiles, monkeys, apes, humans, etc.  These so called links are really not missing links at all!  They are just variations of a kind or family that went extinct during or shortly after the flood.  With the understanding of the complexity and diversity of genetics, the limits of natural selection, and a Biblical world view, there wasn’t any evidence for evolution in the museum.  But there was a lot of speculation.

Glen Canyon Dam

Lake Powell

We like to take the students to Glen Canyon Dam, which was not only a major engineering accomplishment, but also a good example of what water erosion can produce in a hurry. The dam is situated between the canyon walls near the Utah/Arizona border at Page, Arizona and holds Lake Powell. It is the second largest man-made reservoir in the United States. When full, it is about 180 miles long, has a shoreline of almost 2000 miles, and is about 500 feet deep in the main channel.

The dam was meant to control water flow on the lower Colorado River; however, in 1983 it almost became the victim of flooding from the upper drainages. It was an extremely wet spring. All the dams upriver began to open the spillways allowing huge amounts of water downstream.

The water filled Lake Powell dangerously high, and the overflow tunnels were opened. After awhile, the engineers were shocked to see the water coming out of one of the tunnels turn from clear water to the color of the sandstone. The water had eroded through 3 feet of steel reinforced concrete into the surrounding rock. They shut down the overflow tube, made make-shift plywood retaining walls and hoped for the best.

Finally, the danger passed. Later inspection of the damaged tunnel revealed that in a very short time, cavitation produced by the water flow had eroded an area 180 feet long and 40 feet deep – into solid sandstone.  Had the water been allowed to continue to pass through the tunnel, it is possible that the erosion could have caused the dam to fail sending a devastating wall of water downstream.

Grand Lake

That would not have been the first time that happened if creationist theories of the formation of the Grand Canyon are correct. We think that there was an enormous lake 2000 feet deeper than the present Lake Powell, and which extended hundreds of miles further upstream and into the surrounding area.

When it collapsed through a natural barrier, a good share of the present Grand Canyon would have been carved out by the flooding waters very quickly. We point out to the students that the cavitation that occurred at the Glen Canyon Dam is just a small picture of the enormous erosion that a lot more water could produce in a very short time during Noah’s Flood and subsequent events.

Wupatki Anasazi Ruins

Wupatki Ruins

The Anasazi. They are called the Ancient Ones. Where did they come from? Where did they go?

Heaps of rock where villages once stood, leftover pottery, various artifacts and drawings on the rocks are all that remain. What made these ancient ones abandon their homes, farms, and villages? Was it drought? Perhaps they fled from hostile tribes – or perhaps volcanoes rained down hot material on them.

Some people think the Pueblo and Hopi Indians are their descendants. No one knows for sure, but the place is now desolate except for the park officials and the tourists.

Where did they come from? Archeologists do not know, but the Bible gives us clues. Since they were human beings, we can confidently say that they were descendents of Adam and later Noah.

After the Flood, God told the people to spread out and fill the earth, but they refused to obey and instead, built a city and a tower that was later called Babel. Then God “helped” them obey by confusing the languages and causing Noah’s descendents to spread out over the face of the earth.

So, the Anasazi were descendents of Noah that found their way from Babel to the Americas. They lived and thrived for awhile in the American southwest more than a thousand years ago. They developed farms, cities, artwork, cultural traditions, trade routes, and religious practices.

Today we find remnants of their civilization, but much of their history remains a mystery. However this much we know – they were not “primitive” ignorant savages, but intelligent human beings, descendants of Adam and Noah, trying to make a living in a difficult environment.
