Are Caves and Cave Formations Really Old?

On the way back from our Texas seminars, we stopped off at Carlsbad Caverns. This was my fourth visit to the caves. Since my first visit in 1970 to the present, there have been some improvements for the safety of the tourists, but other than that, little else has changed in the cave system. The cave formations that are open to the public are mostly inactive – not growing in size – so no change there. The teaching of vast ages to form the caverns and formations has also remained the same over the years.

Signs at the caverns claim that 250 million years ago - an ancient reef grew in a shallow tropical sea and over millions of years sea animals and plants piled up and created a reef hundreds of feet thick. After 15 million years, the sea dried up and the reef was left high and dry. 60 million years ago, acids and water dissolved cavities in the limestone. 3 million years ago the cavities enlarged, the water drained away, and roof sections collapsed. Then recently (beginning 500,000 year ago) stalactites, stalagmites and other cave formations formed as limestone-laden ground water dripped into the air-filled caverns.

Even though the timeframe for formation of stalactites and stalagmites is open to debate, the uniformitarian model taught in geology textbooks tell us that they both take thousands of years per cubic inch to form.

One website on caves states, “The average growth is one cubic inch (per drip source) for every 100 years.” http://www.exploringcaves.com/formations.php  Another site states, “Most solutional caves require more than 100,000 years to grow large enough for a human to be able to pass through (Palmer 1991).” http://www.esi.utexas.edu/outreach/caves/caves.php

George Rodgers Monument

Actually there are many evidences to show that cave formation can happen quickly. “In Sequoia Caverns, stalactites protected from tourists from 1977-1987 grew 10 inches (25.4 cm) or 1 inch (2.54 cm) / year. At this rate they could have grown 300 ft (91.44 m) in just 3600 years.” http://creationwiki.org/Cave

The picture with the boy shows stalactite and stalagmite coming together to form an 11 foot (3.35 m) column. Using one linear inch / year (using stated one cubic inch (per drip source) for every 100 year) it should have taken more than 13200 years to form. However, this column is found in the basement of the George Rogers Clark Memorial (built with limestone) in Vincennes, Indiana. Stalagmites, stalactites as well as five other eleven foot (3.35 m) columns are also found in this basement. This building was forty years old when these pictures were taken!Time is not the key ingredient for cave formations … water and the right minerals are the key!

Do You Think They Will Read Them?

Mary Jo & I were doing presentations at a church on Sunday. One of the parents really got excited about the creation message and wanted some resources. I suggested two “must have books” for her boys on dinosaurs (Dragons of the Deep, and Dinosaurs for Kids). Her question was “Do you think they will read them?” I guess they were really into video games.

I assured her not only of the importance that they get material to counteract the evolutionary indoctrination but also that they would likely find the material fascinating. Well, she bought them.

Did they read them? The  photo above was taken a few minutes later just outside the church. You be the judge.  Young people are starving for the truth and you can help get those valuable resources into their hands! Send them to the Discover Creation Website as a start.

Misinformation

“Did you know that pelicans go blind from the pounding their eyes take when diving for food? Then, being unable to hunt, they die of starvation.” Or, “Brown Pelicans hit the water so hard diving for food that their life span is shortened because of the continual impact their skulls sustain.” These are statements that you hear a lot from eco tour guides and even read about on so-called-educational websites.

These ideas are actually unsupported myths or bits of misinformation. Unfortunately, many people believe these types of misinformation without question. We see a lot of stories regarding evolution being touted in educational books, magazines, television and museums … and many people will believe these types of misinformation without question.

One of the predominate themes all of the speakers at AOI teach, is to ask, “What’s The Evidence?” By asking that question regarding the above statements, I found out that they were false. It seems most Brown Pelicans live up to 40 years old. The main cause of death is not blindness or pounding headaches; rather the main cause of death seems to be old age, or entanglement in fishing lines, nets and hooks.

Be skeptical … ask, “What’s the evidence?” … and you might find what is being promoted as truth is in fact false or misinformation.

Brown Pelicans – Flying Wonders

Master of Flight

Any time I am near the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean, I love to observe Brown Pelicans … one of God’s amazing flying machines.

The Brown Pelican is a large bird. It is 42 to 54 inches (106 – 137 cm) long, weighs 6 to 12 pounds (2.75 – 5.5 kg) and has a wingspan of 6 to 8.2 feet (1.83 – 2.5 m). Of the eight species of pelicans, the Brown Pelican is actually the smallest.

Brown Pelicans are fantastic flyers. I have seen them gliding low over the water … so low their wingtips brush the waves. They effortlessly glide up and over waves, still remaining only inches above the water’s surface. Many times they can be seen flying in a single file formation (I have seen up to 12 birds flying together), following the lead pelican, with perfect precision that rivals (perhaps surpasses?) the United States Navy’s Blue Angels

Pelicans in Formation

Brown Pelicans are found along the ocean shores, and not on inland lakes, and are the only pelicans that plunge from the air into the water to catch its food. I don’t know of any airplane that can smack into the water like they do and survive! They dive from above and scoop or dip fish into a huge pouch they have on their long, hook tipped beak. After catching the fish, the Brown Pelicans rise to the surface and drain the water from the flexible pouch. Their pouch holds more than their stomachs can … 3 gallons (11.4 l) in the pouch compared to only 1 gallon (3.8 l) in the stomach.

After draining the water from its pouch, the Brown Pelican tips the beak up and swallows the catch. I have often seen sea gulls actually sitting on the backs of Brown Pelicans, waiting for a chance to rob the pelicans of their catch before they get to swallow.

Man invented airplanes, but the idea of flight and flying machines came from the study of birds … God’s airplanes … wonders of flight!

Flying Fish

We just finished 2 weeks of family vacation either on the water or near the water. I am always amazed at the great diversity of animal life God created on and in the seas.

From 9 decks above the ocean, I looked down and caught the sight of a silvery flash streaking above the water. Within seconds it was gone, but soon I saw a miniature explosion, and out of the water was another streak of silver … a flying fish! Now I have seen flying fish before, but never at this height. It took awhile for my brain to understand what I was seeing!

Flying fish are not actually flying, they are gliding. God designed them with unusually large pectoral fins. By moving their tail up to 70 times per second, they are able to build up speed to glide up out of the water. They then spread their aerodynamic pectoral fins, tilt them to an angle to give lift, and take short gliding flights above the surface of the water. Sometimes they will drop their tail into the water to push themselves into another glide. At the end of the glide, they fold their wings and plunge back into the sea.

Normally a flying fish will glide about 160 feet (50 m), but some have been measured to glide and incredible 1300 feet (400m). They have been clocked at flying over 43 mph (70 kmh). Although they normally glide just above the surface of the water, some have been seen gliding up to an altitude of 20 feet (6m). One flying fish was seen to have glided for 45 continuous seconds.

Scientists say the flying fish uses its gliding skill to escape predators … that is probably true … but I suspect they also often do it just for the fun of it!

Youth Rally and People “Getting It!”

Mary Jo & I spoke for a youth rally as a portion of our seminar series in Pinedale, Wyoming. Someone who really saw how important it was to get as many youth as possible to see the creation material donated a brand new IPAD as a prize for a drawing held during the rally.

That “bribe,” coupled with a pizza party and a pastor who also encouraged them to come, got a lot of youth out! We were also happy to see most all of them paying close attention to our creation programs.

Unfortunately, they didn’t let Mary Jo or I to put our names in for the drawing! So if anyone wants to donate a couple of IPADS we will make sure at least one of them gets to be a youth rally door prize.

It is always good to see people who  “get it.” These individuals understand what evolutionary indoctrination is doing to their youth’s faith and are willing to sacrifice to make sure they hear the truth. For all of those who “get it,” thank you for standing with us and the youth in this crucial issue.

Family Time

For those of you who have been following us on the AOI blog, you might have wondered why Marilyn and I have been silent for the last 3 weeks. We have been on vacation for 2 weeks, followed by 1 week away on a mission trip with our church in New Mexico (with no internet access).

Since becoming a Christian, I have always tried to put God first, family second, and ministry third. One of the downsides of being in a traveling ministry is being away from family for long periods of time. Being on the road for sometimes over 50% of the year means that ministry time has surpassed family time. Naturally, while at home we try to spend as much time with our daughters and their husbands, our grandchildren, and our parents as possible. However, we all have very busy schedules, so getting together for any length of time is difficult.

To be able to have time with all of the family, we have been carving time out of our schedules to have vacations together every year. My Mother has several condominium time shares that she trades for different locations throughout the country, so we have been able to have vacations with her that would normally be unaffordable for us on a missionary budget.

As grandparents, we never get enough time with our grandchildren, we are taking the three oldest grandkids along with us to different Bible camps where we will be teaching this summer. We will take each one individually so that we can have lots of one-on-one time with them. Who knows … maybe we will be training them up to take over the ministry for us someday!

Web Response From India

I received this email from someone in India who has found our website:

Dear Sirs,

I intend to introduce myself as Pastor *******, based in *****, India. I found your website to be wonderful with material made in the spirit of I would say young Elihu’s remarks in the Book of Job

“Let me go on, and I will show you the truth. For I have not finished defending God! I will present profound arguments for the righteousness of my Creator.”- Job 36:2-3

Keep up your good work.

Blessings,

******

Rifkin and Today’s Genetic Engineering

Mary Jo and I have had the privilege and pleasure of staying with Dave Harper and his wife, Barb, while teaching in Pinedale, WY. We always enjoy being with them, both because of their great hospitality and the stimulating conversation.

Dave, currently the President of our Board of Directors, reminded me this morning of a quotation, originally written in 1983, which I had read years ago. With today’s push toward genetic engineering, I think we should be aware of the evolutionary and new age philosophy which permeates some of today’s genetic researchers. Back in 1983, Jeremy Rifkin wrote:

“We no longer feel ourselves to be guests in someone else’s home and therefore obliged to make our behavior conform with a set of pre-existing cosmic rules. It is our creation now. We make the rules. We establish the parameters of reality. We create the world, and because we do, we no longer feel beholden to outside forces. We no longer have to justify our behavior, for we are now the architects of the universe. We are responsible to nothing outside ourselves. For we are the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever and ever.”  (Jeremy Rifkin, Algeny, 1983, p. 244.)

Rifkin then went on to say that we have only copied the creation in the past, but now we will make new things which will surpass any design that has been before. With a no-Creator God concept, man is left to his own vices.

From my perspective that we have an all-knowing Creator God, I would want to know why God made certain things the way He did before I started to change it. Man has made big mistakes in the past when we didn’t understand the function of parts of even our own body (tonsils, appendix, pituitary gland, etc). Why should we think that a genetically altered creation including our food, and eventually humans themselves, will be superior to God’s design? I really wonder when God will finally say enough is enough and put an end to all of man’s arrogant pride.
