How Firm a Foundation

The words of the old hymn, How Firm a Foundation, have been running through my mind today. What a message to meditate on!

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord

Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!

What more can He say than to you He hath said,

To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

This firm foundation begins way back in the beginning in Genesis 1. “In the beginning, God …” What a comfort it is to know that God was there in the beginning … and He will be there in the end. He has promised to never leave us or forsake us. We can trust His promise because His Word is sure … it is accurate and reliable from the very first verse.

No matter how many attacks are leveled at the Word of God, it stands firm. Skeptics may doubt it and mockers may scoff, but the Word of the Lord stands true. And for those of us who bow before the Lord and trust His Word, He again and again brings confirmation.

The so-called “proofs” of evolution fall to the ground under careful scrutiny. Paleontology has failed to produce the transitional forms – the “kinds” are distinct and the “missing links” are still missing.

Biology has failed to demonstrate the plausibility of origin of life from non-living chemicals, or to explain the origin of the vast amounts of complex, highly ordered genetic material by chance and natural processes.

Known scientific principles contradict naturalistic evolutionary scenarios, but fit beautifully with the Biblical account.

Again and again, true scientific research is affirming the truth of the Biblical record. To borrow a line from Dr. John Morris, President of the Institute for Creation Research, “It’s a great time to be a Bible-believing Christian and young earth creationist.”

And if we can trust what the Word says about the beginning, we can also trust what it says about the end. In a world full of turmoil, confusion, fighting, and pain, we can have confidence in our God and in the hope He offers through faith in Jesus Christ. Truly, we have a “firm foundation” in the Word of God!

Needing a Liver

Recently, a pastor friend of ours was very ill for over a year because of a very diseased liver, and desperately in need of a liver transplant. On the waiting list with him was a 2 year old baby, also critically in need of a liver. Who would get the next available liver depended on whoever was compatible.

A liver finally became available through the death of a 16 year old boy. A lady, keeping us up to date on the pastor, shared, “We have such an awesome God!  Isn’t it just like Him to go way beyond what we are even thinking with His Blessings.  Pastor _____ and the baby were both compatible, so the baby also got part of the liver (the smaller lobe) …”

After a 6 ½ hour surgery (a liver transplant being one of the most difficult of organ transplants) the liver began to work almost immediately. As of this writing, the pastor is doing extremely well.

The adult human liver (the body’s largest internal organ) performs more than 500 different tasks. Each drop of blood that passes through the microscopic veins of the liver is continually regulated to keep the blood at the proper chemical balance. It adds needed chemicals and breaks down useless chemicals into useful components.

The liver neutralizes poisons, balances hormones, maintains blood clotting factors, produces proteins, makes and adds infection fighting substances, stores minerals and vitamins, gives the body quick energy when needed, makes bile for digestion of fats … and so much more.

The human liver is just one of the many well- designed organs that never could have come about by millions of years of evolutionary chance and accident. For us to even survive, we needed a liver that was fully functional right from the very beginning. Even transplant patients are receiving a working liver … they don’t have millions of years for evolution to come up with a solution to their dilemma. The amazing liver points to a Creator!

The death of the 16 year old was a tragedy; however through his death, 2 lives were saved. Millions of people have been saved because of what Jesus did upon the cross. He willing died (and arose) so that ALL lives might be saved, if they only believed. Do you believe?

Church Sign of the week:

This Church Believes God’s Word!

Mary Jo and I just finished doing a seminar at Grace Bible Church in Sherman, TX. The pastor of this church teaches solidly on the Biblical record of Creation, and the people are eager to increase their understanding of scientific evidence that supports the Biblical view. We enjoyed the informed and enthusiastic response, especially from the young people who are being trained to defend their faith with boldness and confidence.

It is so good to be in a church like this. I wish all churches would hold the Word of God in high esteem as this church does. Unfortunately, many do not. Sadly, many churches will not even invite us to do a creation seminar because we actually teach that you can take the Bible seriously, beginning in Genesis.

I remember a time years ago when I was asked to teach at a church where the pastor was solid, but many in his congregation were not. A couple of years later the leadership of the church asked him to step down. “Why?” he asked. Sheepishly they told him that he believed the Bible too much!

What a tragedy for that church – and for the young people in the church who were not given a firm foundation on the Word of God – because some of the leaders didn’t believe it. How many more students are sent into the world unprepared because their churches do not take a strong stand on the reliability of Scripture?

I don’t know about you, but when my turn comes to stand before the Lord, I would rather be accused of believing the Bible too much rather than try to explain to God why I didn’t believe His Word!
