How Firm a Foundation

The words of the old hymn, How Firm a Foundation, have been running through my mind today. What a message to meditate on!

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord

Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!

What more can He say than to you He hath said,

To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

This firm foundation begins way back in the beginning in Genesis 1. “In the beginning, God …” What a comfort it is to know that God was there in the beginning … and He will be there in the end. He has promised to never leave us or forsake us. We can trust His promise because His Word is sure … it is accurate and reliable from the very first verse.

No matter how many attacks are leveled at the Word of God, it stands firm. Skeptics may doubt it and mockers may scoff, but the Word of the Lord stands true. And for those of us who bow before the Lord and trust His Word, He again and again brings confirmation.

The so-called “proofs” of evolution fall to the ground under careful scrutiny. Paleontology has failed to produce the transitional forms – the “kinds” are distinct and the “missing links” are still missing.

Biology has failed to demonstrate the plausibility of origin of life from non-living chemicals, or to explain the origin of the vast amounts of complex, highly ordered genetic material by chance and natural processes.

Known scientific principles contradict naturalistic evolutionary scenarios, but fit beautifully with the Biblical account.

Again and again, true scientific research is affirming the truth of the Biblical record. To borrow a line from Dr. John Morris, President of the Institute for Creation Research, “It’s a great time to be a Bible-believing Christian and young earth creationist.”

And if we can trust what the Word says about the beginning, we can also trust what it says about the end. In a world full of turmoil, confusion, fighting, and pain, we can have confidence in our God and in the hope He offers through faith in Jesus Christ. Truly, we have a “firm foundation” in the Word of God!

  1. Your blog triggered something that so many of us, me included, fail to grasp: The gravity of The Fall in Genesis.

Imagine living in paradise – as Adam and Eve did. The animals are harmless, the fruits are abundant and wonderful. No stinging or prickly plants; no thorns. Colorful birds – so many kinds we don’t even know existed – singing. The dinosaurs calling like Elk bugling – how that must have sounded (and shook the leaves and rattled bones). The sun wasn’t hot, the nights weren’t cold, the scent of flowers filled the air – I could go on.

Now – imagine the fall. God makes clothes for you from the skin of an animal. Something died so you weren’t naked. You’ve been ousted from the Garden of Eden. The fruits you find may not be ripe, or worse, overripe and rotten. Some plants now have developed thorns that pierce your skin. You see Vultures feeding on the organs of some animal – the inside parts that you’d never seen. The birds don’t sing around you any longer – they take flight – reaffirming your guilt. You witness atrocities as animals kill and devour each other – and you fear for your own self and wonder what your insides would look like all over the ground. Hearing that bone rattling, bellowing bugle of a large dinosaur strikes fear into your core – and God no longer walks with you to comfort you.

I can only imagine the sense of dread that gripped Adam and Eve and how they felt that one of their children may be their savior. Imagine how many years Adam and Eve looked at the chaos their world descended into and longed to be redeemed. Sin really is a bigger deal that what we all may think it is.

And… all of this isn’t just a story. It is REALITY!

How many of us would look for our redemption if we truly understood the magnitude of our fallen state?
