From All of Us to You and Yours – Merry Christmas

The month of December is usually a time off of the seminar road for AOI speakers. Now by “time off” you might think a time of relaxation and a time to be lazy … however; December turns out to be one of the busiest months for Marilyn and me.

This month is full of general repair and maintenance on our home and vehicles. It is a time to butcher and process the wild game God provided for us. It is a month to catch up on some of the writing that always needs to be done. It is a time to catch up on reading and research. It is a time to work on new programs and the art work for new programs. It is a time to do local ministry. And, it is a time to enjoy our families.

As our grandchildren have grown older, they have become more involved with all kinds of activities, either through home-schooling or church. December is a month packed full of violin, piano, ballet, American Sign Language, drama recitals and performances.

Also, very important … it is a time to refocus on what Christmas is all about … Jesus Christ.

So on behalf of all of us at AOI and from my family, we wish you a very Blessed and Merry Christmas!

Something to “Snicker” About

I think I finally figured it out! I took this shot at our recent staff Christmas party of a T-Rex caught in action.

Why did the dinosaurs grow so large? Why did they become extinct? It’s obvious! Just like the rest of us — too much holiday sweets!

The Hydrologic Cycle – No Surprise to God

Hydrologic Cycle

The water in oceans, lakes, and rivers got there because of rain and snow … which came from evaporated moisture from those same oceans, rivers, and lakes. Thus we have a Hydrologic Cycle.

Wind patterns

Only recently did man discover that the wind actually moves in large circular patterns on the globe, allowing evaporation and the Hydrologic Cycle to take place.

The Bible describes the Hydrologic Cycle:

“The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits. All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.”  Ecclesiastes 1:6-7

This verse, which very accurately describes the Hydrologic Cycle and the global wind patterns, was written by Solomon in 935 B.C. Other passages dealing with aspects of the Hydrologic Cycle can be found in Job 36:27-28, Psalms 135:7, Jeremiah 10:13, Isaiah 55:10 and Ecclesiastes 1:6.

Once again the Bible reveals a great deal of scientific truth written hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of years before being “discovered” by modern scientists.

Use More Paper??

I received an email from Dean Rickman, who is the company representative at the printer AOI has been using for our publication Think & Believe. It goes right along with the previous blog I wrote regarding Mount St. Helens and human involvement in the environment.

It certainly illustrates a viewpoint that mankind should use the resources that God has provided wisely which is similar to dressing and keeping the garden –even though the original Garden is not here!  Use the forests’ resources, but don’t abuse them. Now, I’m not advocating wasting paper or trees, but Dean’s email is worth noting. He wrote:

  • Annual net growth of U.S. forests is 36% higher than the volume of annual tree removals.
  • The paper and forest products industry replenishes more than it takes and ensures the sustainability of our forests by planting 1.7 million trees every single day, more than three times what is harvested.
  • There are nearly 750 million acres of forests in the U.S – about the same as 100 years ago.
  • 600 million seedlings planted annually supplement natural regeneration in Canada.

“Forestry is the most sustainable of all the primary industries that provide us with energy and materials…To address climate change, we must use more wood, not less. Using wood sends a signal to the marketplace to grow more trees…”

Mount St. Helen’s Lesson in Forestry

Seeing all the Christmas trees lately made me think about all the stages of growth of trees I have seen over the years at Mount St. Helens. Mary Jo & I have taken a lot of students there over the years. Each time I have been awestruck by the phenomenal growth/regeneration of the forests after the mountain erupted - decimating the landscape 30 years ago.

But what really impressed me was the fact that the areas left to recover on their own had very sparse regrowth, whereas in areas where the lumber and paper industry had a hand in the reforestation, the forests are now stunning! The companies did not waste any time after the eruption, but almost immediately began planting millions of small seedlings which today are beautiful trees.

This really drives home the point in Genesis where Adam was told to dress and keep the Garden. Part of the “green movement” advocates a “hands off policy,” believing man is the evil player in the environment.  This certainly is not the case, especially when we see the results of human involvement at Mount St. Helens. If man exercises good stewardship over God’s Creation, the result can be magnificent.

Our Hope in Jesus

A few summers ago, we met a missionary couple who have established a school in Gambia (a country in West Africa). Gambia is predominately Muslim in faith. I just want to share a few excerpts from their recent newsletter:

“Each year as Christmas arrives we are given the opportunity to remember why Jesus came to earth. All people had no hope and were separated from God by sin, yet, the prophets of old predicted a day when the Messiah would come. Unable to fix our own mess, we needed someone, a Savior, who would be able to restore our relationship with God.”

“Last year we spent our first Christmas in Gambia ministering in a Muslim culture. We had the opportunity to experience the emptiness of a Christmas season without Jesus.  Just like back then when people did not recognize His coming, Gambians went about their business, still not knowing that a Savior had been born, still not mentioning the name of Jesus……but how can they believe unless they first hear?”

“The Bible tells us that ‘In His name the nations will put their hope.’ (Matthew 12:21)  We pray that the nation of Gambia will put their hope in Him!  We pray for the Holy Spirit to reveal the Savior of the world to many more!”

“Because of Jesus we have hope. We have hope for the future, that we will be redeemed; hope for the present, that we are not alone. Hope that our failures are not greater than God’s love. Jesus came to bring us hope, not just for the future, but for today. Rather than trusting in ourselves, let us put our hope in Him.”

As I read this couples newsletter, my heart went out to the people of Gambia and the need for them to hear the Gospel. At the same time, my prayers go out to the people of the United States … our people have the same urgent need … to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. So many Americans are experiencing ” the emptiness of a Christmas season without Jesus.” The hope in Jesus is what Christmas is all about.

Scientific Information Is There, We need To Just Look.

I have been teaching recently at The Atrium of Grand Valley, a retirement home, which is located in Grand Junction, CO.   Some of the topics I have covered so far are: The Origin of Life and the Glory of God;  Which God is the One True God; and I am now teaching my Genesis Series starting with Genesis Chapter One.

To know more about these programs you can visit our website at discovercreation.org.  There you will find listed the titles along with a short summary of each topic.

The residents have been encouraged and challenged by the Biblical and scientific information.  Many who attend are having their questions answered.  People do not realize the vast amount of scientific information in Genesis.

For example, in Genesis chapter two verse twenty one, God puts Adam to sleep before He operates. It is good to put people to sleep before we operate (anesthesia). Another example is in Genesis chapter thirty with Jacob and his wages (sheep) from Laban.  As a former farmer I worked with genetics, understanding both recessive and dominant genes, hybrids and purebreds, etc.  Jacob also understood these principles of genetics.

When we truly study the Bible one can discover a vast amount of scientific information.

More – Is the Bible Scientifically Accurate?

The Bible was not written as a science textbook. It was written to explain God’s purpose and relationship to man. Yet the Bible does contain a great deal of scientific truth written hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of years before being “discovered” by modern scientists.

The ancient Greeks thought the world was held up by Atlas (Greek mythology – a Titan who was forced by Zeus to bear the sky on his shoulders). Others supposed it was hanging from the heavens by means of a hefty chain. The Egyptians believed the earth was propped up by five huge poles.

The Hindu religion taught that an elephant(s) carried the earth on its back, which itself was perched upon the shell of a gigantic turtle that was floating in the cosmic sea. Others believed the earth was floating in an enormous ocean.

In 1608, Sir Isaac Newton discovered that the earth was suspended in outer space, being held in orbit by the gravitational force of the sun. It was not until recent times that man has proved Newton’s theory by way of space flights.

The Bible said that the earth is suspended in space 3600 years before scientists discovered it.

He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing. Job 26:7

Big Bro T-Shirt

Well, the word is now out for me to mention!

When we arrived home from one of our speaking trips, we were met by our daughter-in-law and grandson, Samuel, at the door. Samuel was wearing a T-shirt which said ‘Big Bro.’ I almost missed it, as guys are frequently clueless, but it quickly dawned on me what Samuel was announcing! That is exciting. I am happy for Tim & Elisabeth as they anticipate another child into their family in May. I am also happy to think about a second grandchild!

God likes families and I understand a part of the why –being part of the lives of our family has been special!  We give thanks for the “Big Bro” announcement!

Is the Bible Scientifically Accurate?

Redi's experiment

The Bible was not written as a science textbook. It was written to explain God’s purpose and relationship to man. Yet the Bible does contain a great deal of scientific truth written hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of years before being “discovered” by modern scientists.

For a long time people believed in Spontaneous Generation – the idea that living things came from non-living things. For example different cultures thought:

  • Mud turned into frogs.
  • Old rags turned into rats.
  • Rotten meat turned into white worms.

In the late 17th century, a man named Francesco Redi did an experiment to see if meat did turn into worms. His observations revealed that the ‘white worms’ (maggots) were coming from the eggs of flies, not from the non-living meat.

Redi proved that life only comes from life. Yet scientists wouldn’t believe him because it didn’t fit the ‘science of the day’.

In the 18th century a scientist named Spellanzani did more experiment to prove Redi right; but scientists still refused to believe the evidence.

Almost 200 years after Redi’s experiments, Louis Pasteur proved the Law of Biogenesis – that life can only come from life.

The Bible describes biogenesis about 4500 years before man accepted it.

And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:21

(see also Gen. 1:11, 1:24, and 1:25).

The phrase “after his/their kind” is used 10 times in Genesis 1, pointing out not only that life only comes from life, but also that there are limitations of variation.
