Icons of Evolution

Several years ago, I was teaching at a public forum in Alaska about “The Biogenetic Law: Ontogeny Recapitulates Phylogeny”. Essentially, this is the evolutionary idea that as we form in the womb, the human embryo will look like the animals we evolved from. After showing a picture of Haeckel’s drawing of recapitulation (the ones that have been shown to be a fraud), an evolutionary professor interrupted to state that picture was no longer being shown in the textbooks. There were several college students attending, and they actually stood up and “booed” the professor. They said he was wrong. The next evening some of these students brought in a college biology textbook published in 2003 (a book this professor had actually been teaching from!) … in it were Haeckel’s drawings. Yesterday I was speaking to adults at one of our family Vacation Bible School programs about the Icons of Evolution. In the presentation, I point out many of the problems with the so-called “truths” of evolution. Two of the subjects I discussed were Peppered Moths (which has been a known fraud for twenty years) and Darwin’s Finches (where we see variation and adaptation, not evolution). At break a student just finishing the 7th grade told me both of these subjects were in his textbook this past year. He had turned the book back in for the year, but knew the name of the textbook … Glencoe Life Science. Evolutionary “proofs”, which for years have been known to be wrong are still in many of the textbooks today! Parents, you need to check your children’s books. Are they being duped by false information?

A “Scientist,” but not a Christian?

Mary Jo & I just had a parent tell us that their son recently told her that he wanted to be a “scientist,” not a Christian. Oh, my! He is certainly suffering under the influence of too many who are telling him, “If you want to be a scientist you have to leave your faith out of it.”  To make matters worse, the son was getting this at a private “religious” school!  Lanny Johnson had just finished writing an article for the next issue of Kids Think and Believe which addresses just exactly that issue, so we told the mom about it and put her on the mailing list. Her son should get this article. He certainly needs it! We hope it will help this young child see that he can be a Christian and one who does great science.

How Shall They Hear?

I get excited as summer draws near. Summer is the time for Vacation Bible Schools and Bible camps. What an opportunity to be able to share God’s Word with kids. Many people are under the impression that VBS’s and Bible camps are only for churched kids … however, we see a lot of kids that have never set foot in a church attend these events. Many times, this is the first time they have ever heard about Biblical creation or about what Jesus did upon the cross for them – surprisingly, it is sometimes a first for even churched kids. A young child has no problem believing God’s Word, but to believe, they need to hear: How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! ( Ro 10:14 – 15) Last summer we saw 75 kids believe in Jesus. We pray that this summer will be just as fruitful. Would you add Marilyn and I to your prayer list? Just one week of VBS will wear you out … and we have 5 of them, plus a Bible camp and other ministry this summer. As we get older, we find our strength and endurance isn’t what it used to be. Thankfully we don’t rely on our own strength: It is God that girdeth me with strength, (Ps 18:32).

The Life of a Creation Speaker

The life of a traveling speaker can seem glamorous at times, but what’s it really like? “Come along” with us and see. Before you even start, there’s lots of “up-front” work – scheduling, studying, lecture prep, packing, and preparing to be “away” for 2, 3, or even more weeks. Then, “on the road,” there’s hours and hours of travel time – either by road (along with sometimes hazardous road conditions, traffic, or vehicle breakdowns) or by air (with all that entails – special baggage requirements, security checks, cramped seats, and long airport layovers – or running to catch your plane!). Once you arrive, you unpack, set up for the seminar, do your programs, talk and talk and talk, tear down, pack up, and prepare to do it again. You often have late nights and early mornings, and you sleep in beds which are not your own. Meals vary between gourmet and non-existent, and unless you are very well disciplined, your diet and exercise routine go down the drain. Now don’t get me wrong – we love our work! It’s just not always a bed of roses. We do get to see lots of exotic (and not so exotic) places along the way, and we meet so many wonderful people (and some not-so-wonderful like a few in-your-face atheists). But the best of all is being able to share the Truth from God’s Word and His World with anyone who will listen. Nothing compares with being in His will and doing the work He sets before you. Nothing!

Creating Synthetic Life

Recently in the media there has been a lot of hype about creating synthetic life or artificial life.  Did scientist really create life?  Could non-life evolve into living things?  Is abiogenesis (spontaneous generation) true?  Well, the answer to these questions is no.  Actually, these scientists continue to support the Law of Biogenesis that life only comes from pre-existing life. Let us look at the rest of the story.  It took the following: 20 highly ‘qualified and intelligent scientists’; the use of high tech computers and equipment; 40 million dollars; about 15 years of research; and yeast cells (that were already created by God) to change bacteria into bacteria.  These scientists did not make bacteria from scratch, because they started with already living materials.  They first had to search for two very closely related species of bacteria (Mycoplasma mycoides and Mycoplasma capricolum).  Then, they removed the DNA from M. capricolum and replaced it with a synthetic copy of M. mycoides.  At first the procedure did not work because of some very minor DNA copying errors, and so it appears that conditions have to be just right for this procedure to work.  These scientists used bacterial cytoplasm, which was created by God, and copied the DNA code of another bacterium to make bacteria. This experiment demonstrates the fact that life does not happen by chance and accident, but by intelligence!  The Bible has been stating this fact for thousands of years!  The Law of Biogenesis states that life comes from life, and so we see it could not have evolved from dead material.  Life had to be created by an eternal living being – God.  True science continues to fit with Scripture.
